METALLICA's LARS ULRICH On His Drumming Ability: 'I Usually Feel Like I've Regressed' - June 27, 2012
DRUM! magazine recently conducted an interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On his playing ability:

Lars: "I usually feel like I've regressed. [laughs] I'm like, 'Why can't I do that anymore?' You know, when I heard these songs [on the 'Beyond Magnetic' EP] a couple of months ago, I thought that it sounded really exciting. I thought there was a really good, lively vibe — it's a bunch of guys just playing together, and it sounded really full of energy and spunk and liveliness. And that was kind of the whole thing on the 'Death Magnetic' sessions was to try to keep all that energy as preserved as possible. The one thing I'm really proud of with the 'Death Magnetic' album is just how fucking lively it sounds. How it doesn't sound careful, it doesn't sound stale. It doesn't sound, kind of, too cerebral — it's just physical. It's just lively and full of spunk and full of people that are playing music with each other, in a room, you know? That was kind of what we were going for with 'Lulu' [the recent METALLICA/Lou Reed collaboration]."

On the new crop of speed-metal drummers:

Lars: "Those guys, I think they do something that's so … that's not the stuff that I do. Not just not what I do but also not what I'm interested in doing. Their stuff is so technical, and I totally respect it, I admire it, but I'm much more interested in kind of more traditional things, like songwriting and groove and attitude and vibe."

On whether he practices his playing:

Lars: "I can't say that I necessarily sit down to practice, like, 'I'm going to play and practice so I can get better.' What happens is that I just sit down and kind of play to just more stay in shape. You know, METALLICA was up to two or three months off last year, and I would sit down, I have an iPod next to my drums so I can play along to all kind of crazy stuff, and try to see if I can land in the same zip code of some of that stuff occasionally. But I can't say that I sit down to necessarily practice to sort of get better. For most of my stuff, it's about listening and about interpreting stuff that I'm listening to. So all the kind of sitting down and, you know, 'Now I'm going to do thirty-second-note paradiddles standing on my head — you know what I mean? I don't do that kind of stuff so much. For me it's more about the regimen of staying in shape, running every day, eating healthy, you know, being on top of that side of it."

Lars pretty much says he doesn't try to keep up with current drummers, practice to get better and doesn't really care about any of it. Honest answer. From this fan's perspective, it's just too bad he doesn't try to keep it in the same "zip code" as say '...AJFA'. The snare only fills from 'DM' take that live vibe and shoots it right in the foot.

Metallica vs Iron Maiden ( a comparison)

Metallica can sell out any arena and stadium in the world
Iron Maiden can sell out any arena and stadium in the world

Metallica used to rely on word of mouth, no videos and no radio airplay.

Iron Maiden still relies on word of mouth, no videos and no radio airplay.

Most of Metallica's fans are casual fans.
Iron Maiden has no casual fans, they are all diehards.

Metallica's midget sits behind the drumkit
Iron Maiden's midget is out in front.

Metallica has sold over 100 million albums
Iron Maiden has sold over 85 million albums

Metallica has no mascot
Iron Maiden has the best mascot in rock.

Metallica's worst album is St. Anger (or Load, or Reload)
Iron Maiden's worst album is (oh who are we kidding, even Blaze Bayley albums are better than St. Anger, Load and Reload)

So you decide.

lost its passion & fire.

Kirk > same old, same old wah pedal effects with the same solo
James > weakened voice & cheesy lyrics
Lars > lazy drumming, no passion and no heart
Crab boy> yes man who will do anything for the $

I used to love this band, saw every tour, multiple shows, owned every album and single, proudly wore their shirts and flew the Metallica flag.

I even liked most of the songs on Load & Reload, but when Jason left, the band lost its' heart & connection to its long standing fans.

These days it's sad to hear them live. DM was an okay album but my Metallica & the band that I loved is gone. I will mourn the band & will have to settle for listening to the old stuff and remembering the band when it still had credibility, passion & fire.

Comparing Metallica to Maiden is like comparing a James Bond car to a 1970s hippy van. Sure the hippy van looks cool and is fun for a couple of trips but for the long haul, I want the car that can fire machine guns, launch bombs and turn into a submarine if necessary. There is no comparison, Metallica owns Maiden.

Maiden is way better than Metallica. Metallica hasn't released anything decent since the mid 90s. They're just making soulless records now.

Sorry, gonna have to agree. Maiden and Metallica? Come on, now. Nobody is going to go to a Metallica concert and beg them to play anything other than what they did 20 years ago. Maiden has produced amazing albums throughout their entire career.

And I'm pretty sure they practice their instruments to get better.

Bleeding Me I agree with you on. I think Load and ReLoad are decent albums.

My Apocalypse..... no...just no. There is nothing good about Death Magnetic. In addition to the horrid production you have James sounding worse than he ever has and boring songs that are way too long. When I said Metallica just makes soulless records now, I referring mainly to Death Magnetic. There is no heart in that album at all.

Yeah I agree man, I mean Maiden has good tunes but I always found them to be sorta corny. Hetfield's lyrics and vocals blow Dickinson away by a longshot. Metallica sounds like a country-side being nuked while Maiden has that goofy ass epic sound of a bunch of medieval knights riding into battle on horses. Which one wins wars faster? I know it's heavy metal we're talking about and most of the foundations of metal tackled the subject matter of epic fantasy, like Maiden (and sometimes Metallica) tends to dabble, but I honestly always found that shit to be way too dungeons & dragons-ish and also pretty damn lame. Gimme a song about a modern day man made apocalypse over a guy with a sword venturing forth into unbeknownst danger anyday.

Just was reading that other thread about Portnoy being picked "best drummer" or whatever and of course a ton of posts about how this that and the other guy are all better, best... what is the point, honestly. Maybe I do get what Ulrich is saying here, that it ultimately comes down to does the drumming enhance the music or not. I was a teenager when their first albums came out and they were right there at the top of my list up through AJfA, but I drifted away from them after that and only ever listen to them when they are on the radio which I also only listen to maybe a couple times a month.
Having said that, when I think about it, AJfA is maybe the only album I can think of to where *drumming* is one of the first words I associate with it. People can rip on Lars or not and honestly I'm indifferent. Maybe it took like 5000 takes to get those AJfA drum parts recorded, I don't know, I never researched it and I don't care, because that is still one of my favorite albums and the drumming on it not only enhanced the music, it defines that album for *me*.

I'd tell him, but what would be the point? He's rich, he made his money, he can do anything he likes.

But in the end, he knows he's not a great drummer. It's not like he's going to come out and say it, but saying you don't practice to get better paints a good picture of how he considers himself as a musician. That is to say.. he doesn't value his own growth. That's kind of sad.

I got into Metallica around '85 and NEVER heard anyone b*tch about Lars' drumming then. If anything, he managed to win a few "Best Drummer" polls.

is, in my non-drumming opinion, great.

and i remember back then, and during the Justice period, when people respected his playing.

i get the whole "i'm into the song, not being a technical superstar" position, but you should, at the very least, be able to play your classic songs the same as they were recorded.

to not to so, to play a tune like "Master Of Puppets" and cheat your way through it, is lazy and ripping off the fans.

no one needs him to be Neil Peart, but play the classic songs as recorded.

if James played "Disposable Heroes" only hitting some of the notes on guitar instead of the whole riff, fans would be rightfully pissed.

that said, i enjoyed the songs on DM way more than i expected, though for the riffing more than the drumming.

No. But, he defined his genre and influenced generations of drummers and still does to this day.

Lars? Same thing. Rip on him all you want, dickheads, the guy defined his genre and influenced tons and tons of amateur and professional drummers for almost 30 years at this point.

That, my blabbertwats, is what matters. A legend, whether you cryasses like it or not.

I'd say Lars has a right to feel like he has regressed.

Came for the mass agreement with Lars on his playing abilities, or lack thereof.

Not disappointed.

Look, you only get to say you're about groove if you're actually about groove. If he truly thinks that there's anything particularly groovy about the same stock pattern he's been playing since 1983 (except slower, and with far less double kick), that's the problem in and of itself.

Only idiots think Lars needs to be more technical; the rest of us are just wishing Lars could at least take his craft seriously. Lars doesn't need to keep up with anyone except his own band, end of story. To anyone who thinks that his playing was adequate on DM, that's another problem. When you have so many twists and turns in an album in terms of tempo changes, time changes, breaks, and transitions, 'adequate' doesn't cut it. Cause in this case, adequate means he served the most rudimentary and basic function of a drummer; he hit the snare and hi-hat in a rhythmic fashion. Great. Now what exactly does that add to the music, songwriting, or dynamics?

The thing I like about Lars' style is that it's very memorable and distinctive (at least on the early stuff, after that it gets a bit more generic but whatever).

I don't really care about his skills, I just wish he'd go back to the sound he had on KEA (and have a ride cymbal back in the kit too). It was such a pure-sounding record. Raw and honest, not over produced. The snare drum tone on DM is atrocious and turns me off giving the album a chance. Dumb, uselessly all over the place. I liked his St Anger tone better, no joking!

I agree completely. Lars' drumming on the first 4 albums is best because it was thought out. Lars knew his strengths, he knew his weaknesses, and as a result his drumming sounded composed instead of felt out, and it actually added to the music in big ways. He wasn't playing stock rolls, and his idiosyncrocies worked for the music.

Totally... he did the best with his limits. That's the kind of musician I find the most interesting. Being in a band is not about individuals showing off, but listening to each other. Less can be more, when there is a synergy.

that's where it ended. The last hurrah. As much as I liked Justice, that was there demise. Then Bob Rock came into the picture and ruined everything. It certainly didn't help when Cliff died.

I just like his honesty, his larsness if you will.

I could give a rats ass if he's technically an amazing drummer or not, I like where he places things and the fact that his patterns are catchy and somewhat off kilter. Moreso on the earlier albums...and the snare rolls are annoying.

"I'm much more interested in kind of more traditional things, like songwriting and groove and attitude and vibe"

I can dig that. Many drummers seem to have disregarded that as being a big part of originality. Extreme technical proficiency is cool and impressive and 220 bpm double kicks is all neato and shit, but Rock n Roll is all about feel, groove & pocket... so I can respect where he's coming from and also... big respect for not trying to bullshit yourself or your fans. "I've regressed." - I love that honesty. Lars is good stuff.

We already live in societies obsessed by performance. I think it's very sad that's this also reflects in music today. I can play faster than the other guy, I can hit the highest or lowest notes, I have the biggest kit, the biggest amp, the biggest dick.... etc etc. It's not the way that the world was meant, it's a pity you don't understand! (pun intended)

Metallica's Ten Best songs are not on "Death Magnetic"

"Death Magnetic" has more good songs on it than any other Metallica Album, or for arguments sake has as many good songs on it as "Black".

Metallica's Best Songs are on RTL, MOP and AJFA

Conclusion? Death Magnetic is better than Load, Reload and St. Anger...possibly combined.

So how do you excuse his lack of chops then, claiming to live all healthy and all? Look at Lombardo, a lazy-ass weedsmoker - and STILL a monster behind the kit.

At least I can respect him for admitting that he's regressed and that there's things he used to do that he can't pull off anymore. man, watch him try to play some of the faster double bass stuff from the early days. Just sounds like a trainwreck. he really ought to practice just for the sake of practicing, though. I never practiced much through my 30s and early 40s, but I've finally figured out in my mid 40s that practing really does help. gets your chops and your stamina back up- something Lars could really use!

It's all hats and snare these days. Boring as shit. I think ever since he put the china where a ride usually is, his playing has gone way off. Even more so since Newsted left. There are people paying a lot money and putting in a lot of effort to see them. I wish he would respect the audience a bit more

Lars should've seriously given up the drum chair to a way better, up-and-coming THRASH METAL drummer (or to Lombardo, for that matter :-) a long-ass time ago.

He should just retire and/or stay the 5th non-performing Metallica member and just stick to writing/producing for the band. That way he's not holding them back performancewise like he's doing these days...

Remember Lombardo doing Battery - the way it SHOULD'VE (could've) been played?

Kudos for him to admit his limitations and just consider drumming as another form of staying in shape, NOT the usual way for a professional drummer to handle it.

Would love to see his chops back up.

good observation lars ... you suck because you don't practice ... turn the pro-tools off next time you record and lets see what you get ... great drum sound you have ... but limited ability ... but that's nothing new for discerning ears ...

and while i'm at it ... metallica in general are mediocre musicians ... robert trujilo is the only bonafide virtuoso in this band ... and not only is he the bass player ... he's the best guitar player in the band too ... kirk hammett is horrible ... dave mustaine is a far better lead player ... once upon a time hetfield was a riff machine but i guess he doesn't practice either ...
