METALLICA: Video Recap Of 'Orion Music + More' Festival - June 26, 2012
The Rock it Out! Blog has posted a seven-minute video recap of METALLICA's first Orion Music + More festival, which took place this past weekend (June 23-24) at Bader Field in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Check it out below.

METALLICA played its 1984 album, "Ride The Lightning", in its entirety for the first time ever during its Saturday headlining set, while doing 1991's "black album" on Sunday. The band played both albums backwards, from the last song to the opening number.

Other acts at the show included AVENGED SEVENFOLD, VOLBEAT, GHOST, CAGE THE ELEPHANT, SEPULTURA, GASLIGHT ANTHEM, ARCTIC MONKEYS and more.

The event also featured exhibitions and events based around each METALLICA's personal hobbies, such as a film festival curated by drummer Lars Ulrich, a custom car show presented by frontman James Hetfield and a horror memorabilia exhibit from guitarist Kirk Hammett.

When asked why METALLICA would want to do their own festival, James Hetfield said in a recent interview, "First of all, because we can. Why wouldn't you? We're just trying to bring a little more of a mix to what is going on. . . . I think the Europeans are able to look at a festival more as an event than 'my favorite band is playing.' We're not necessarily trying to reproduce that in the States, but we'd like to bring a little taste of that here."

Regarding the significance of the "Ride The Lightning" and "Metallica" albums, Hetfield said, "'Ride The Lightning' started to splinter us off from your SLAYERs and other thrash bands. A song called 'Fade To Black' was an instant thorn in the side of the metal community. It was the first veering off the studded path. [The Black Album] became the album, I guess, that people needed to have. It's a gateway for people to get into METALLICA."

Metallica couldn't have possibly delivered a better festival, unless of course they changed the set lists up a little bit more.

The hard core fan in me was PISSED the moment I heard James' "Do you want heavy?" into to "Sad But True" on Saturday, which indicated we would likely get all the rest of the staple songs that night, and likely the following night too. This turned out to be exactly the case.

The other side of me realized that not everyone did the two day passes here, and they were trying to make this festival not only for their most die hard fans, but other fans of music in general. For that reason, I can understand the reason to repeat the most classic songs in their set.

There's just something incredibly cool though, to see James literally jump in on a customer car while being chopped up and literally get right in on the action. Lars was busy doing Q&A's for films that he felt strongly enough about to bring into the festival. Kirk was living it up knowing his Crypt had a constant cue of people in it all weekend and Rob must have been off surfing when he wasn't jamming with Suicidal Tendencies.

Thank you Metallica, for a festival not to be missed.

I just checked out the Saturday night show and left early Sunday.. Anyway, I thought the setlist was insane Saturday night. They only played 1 post Black album song and only 3 from that. Plus there were songs of Ride The Lightning that they hardly ever played if ever at all. May have been the best show I have ever seen by anyone.

Your right though, they put on a great time for everyone. Plenty to do and it was put together right. The Crew didn't bust balls, there were no lines for beer, food or bathrooms.. Good food chouces too! Great energy all around.

I really didn't think it would be good of a time as it was.. I did see the Sunday night setlist and was glad I went to the Casinos instead.. That was AWFUL lol..

It was great to hear James finally sing Escape live. Even though he hates that tune a lot. Hope Metallica keeps it in the set list.

You have to wonder why Metallica is constantly doing shows and not working on a new album. I guess the band knows that the next album is just going to be another pile of shit so what's the hurry. Might as well just keep doing shows and avoid as long as possible the next Metallica disaster album!

"Hetfield said, "'Ride The Lightning' started to splinter us off from your SLAYERs and other thrash bands." - And now SLAYER is still a thrash band and you are a table in bad country band. Great move.

And regardless of what you think about Metallica's latter output its hard to criticize them as a band.

It was pretty well put together and prices were reasonably fair, festivally speaking. Lars even introduced Baroness to the crowd at 1pm when barely anyone was there.

To the guy above crying about metallica showing off their toys....for one,it wasn't James hetfields car collection...it was people from around the area who brought their cars/hotrods/bikes to put on display...I was there and metallica sounded gre

Well said. Cry baby has nothing better to do in the wee hours of the morning other than comment negatively, needs to reevaluate his life, obviously. I'm finding it hard to believe he's actually a fan. Get over it and move on...
