ANTHRAX Drummer To Launch New Signature Coffee Blend - June 26, 2012
Benante's Premium Coffee is a bold statement from a rock music legend, drummer Charlie Benante of the thrash metal band ANTHRAX.

As the creative force behind ANTHRAX since day one, Charlie Benante is behind much of what you hear, see and feel when it comes to their legendary music.

When it comes to taste of the palatable kind, Benante's opinion as a Bronx-bred Italian is held in the highest regard.

A coffee fanatic practically since birth, Benante not only sports a badass Starbucks tattoo, he now creates his own bean blends and signature roasts under his own brand of java greatness — Benante's.

Sign up now and you will receive a flavorful deal on the first round of beans when the Benante's site launches later this summer.

When asked in an October 2011 interview how he developed such a taste for coffee, Benante said, "Since I was a little kid, I was drinking coffee. My mom said that [laughs] she used to put decaf coffee in my bottles with a bunch of milk, because I used to always drink their coffee at the table! And that was it! I've always loved coffee. So when the Starbucks explosion happened, I was like, 'Yeah!' The thing that I love about Starbucks is that, when I travel abroad, I can get exactly what I want. It's familiar, and I can sit there and be likem, 'OK, I'm cool.'"

Benante in 2008 launched his own line of coffee and coffee products via Legends Cup Coffee, which was reportedly owned by MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine's wife Pam. At the time, he stated about the venture, "You all know me, you know how I earn a living. When I'm not bashing on my drums to the sounds of ANTHRAX, I like to enjoy a good cup of coffee. I will drink it hot, iced, frapped and intravenously. I've been all around the world, tried many different blends and I have come up with some combinations that kick ass. If you are a coffee drinker, I think you're going to love it. My coffee is a blend of Central American, African and Asian coffees roasted to a dark color. The aroma is very rich and the cup bold and complex."

How about Vince Neil's instant sober shot. Its like an energy shot, but instead it makes you sober in minutes so you can drive home safe.

I'd rather roast my own beans instead. Pardon me for a moment while I get all evangelical on yer asses (and not about Gojira for once).

That coffee you drank today? Unless you bought it from a roaster the day it was roasted, it was stale - and likely had been long before you put it in your coffeemaker. Roasting your own beans is surprisingly easy and quick. Got a forced-air popcorn popper? If you answered 'yes' to this question, you probably have a quick-and-dirty coffee roaster (check the bottom of your popper's well - where the popcorn goes to meet its fate - if the bottom of the well is solid metal, with air vents around the side, you're golden. Poppers with mesh well bottoms won't work, because odds are there's an exposed heating element on the other side of that mesh, and coffee beans throw off chaff as they roast, and the chaff can be a fire hazard). You can buy purpose-built roasters for around US$100 or so for entry-level models, or you could also get a WhirleyPop stovetop popper. And you can go totally old-school if you want, and roast your beans in a cast-iron skillet on the stovetop - just be patient. And careful.

And where do you get green (unroasted) coffee beans? There are several reputable sources to be found online, but my personal favorite is Sweet Maria's (www.sweetmarias.com). While they specialize in all your trendy-PC-coffeegeek buzzwords (organic, fair-trade, etc.), here's what makes them awesome: they're surprisingly affordable. If you're willing to buy in bulk, say 2lbs. and up, you can get beans from every major coffee-growing region (Central and South America, Africa, Southeast Asia) for US$6/lb. or so. And that money isn't going to some multinational corporation that wrecks the land. It's going straight to the growers themselves.

And as for who's the bigger coffee-nerd in metal, Uncle Charlie doesn't hold a candle to Nergal of Behemoth, a self-professed Starbucks junkie ever since he first toured the UK, then found his caffeinated paradise with his first visit Stateside.

Record sales have really tanked: Motorhead and Queensryche wine, Overkill chocolates, and now you can get your coffee with a bit of Anthrax :)
