Exclusive TESTAMENT Song Premiere: 'True American Hate' - June 26, 2012
"True American Hate", a brand new song from San Francisco Bay Area metallers TESTAMENT, can be streamed using the SoundCloud player below. The track comes off the band's new album, "Dark Roots Of Earth", which will be released in North America on July 31 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was produced, mixed and mastered by acclaimed British producer Andy Sneap (ARCH ENEMY, NEVERMORE, ACCEPT, EXODUS). Special bonus tracks were recorded, mixed and mastered by Juan Urteaga (MACHINE HEAD, EXODUS, TED NUGENT, NIGHT RANGER) at his Trident Studios. The cover artwork for the effort (see below) was painted by Eliran Kantor, who has previously worked with ATHEIST, SIGH, ANACRUSIS and GWAR, among others.

In a recent interview with Decibel magazine, TESTAMENT frontman Chuck Billy stated about "True American Hate", "[It] was kind of inspired by when we sent all our troops overseas, and we were just seeing in the news when all that was going on a lot of young kids, under 10 years old, out there with their families burning American flags. And that was a pretty shocking thing to see, to see that generation, a kid that young being taught to hate that much. It makes you think what's going to happen, 10 to 15 years from now, when the majority of these kids have just been raised to hate. It struck me as a little odd."

Last week, TESTAMENT shot a video for the song "Native Blood". Guitarist Eric Peterson told Greece's Rock Overdose webzine that the clip was going to be filmed "on an Indian reservation." He added, "It's about people who were oppressed in life. We haven't done [a video] in a while, so we're kind of excited about that."

Billy previously stated about "Native Blood", "[It's] basically a song about my Native heritage. It's almost like a protest song, that the Native Americans have a voice that needs to be heard — that's the chorus of the song."

Regarding the recording processs for "Dark Roots Of Earth", Billy said, "We [recorded] it at our place in Oakland and at Trident Studios and Andy [Sneap, producer] came out and did all the recordings with us — as much as he could — and then we finished off some vocals and guitars at Trident studios. I think over the years Andy really knows the sound of this band, and kinda knows what we want. We've mixed stuff with Andy, so I think he knows without has having to be there physically with him what we are looking for. And I just haven't heard anybody in metal come out with any better mixes! Honestly!"

On the topic of some of the other tracks that will appear on "Dark Roots Of Earth", Billy said, "There's a song called 'Cold Embrace', which we kinda hoped we'd be able to pitch the song into one of the 'Twilight' series movies; it's a song about a girl becoming a vampire and never being able to see the sun again. 'Dark Roots Of Earth' is kind of a play on the band we have together, just like a metaphor, like TESTAMENT is a tree and all of us in this group are really embedded in the planet, in the earth, the environment and our surroundings. It was kind of a play on that. 'Rise Up' is more of a war song, like you're preparing yourself for war, going into battle. There is a lot of cool stuff there."

Due to a "serious injury," TESTAMENT drummer Paul Bostaph was unable to take part in the recording sessions for the CD and was replaced by Gene "The Atomic Clock" Hoglan (DARK ANGEL, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, FEAR FACTORY, DETHKLOK). Bostaph has since announced his departure from the group.

When asked if Hoglan — who is currently touring with TESTAMENT — will become a permanent member of the band, Billy told Horns Up Rocks!, "We'd like him to be, but I think right now we're just taking it tour by tour. We don't know yet. We just kind of unexpected had to do this tour before the record came out, so we haven't really thought about it yet."

Regarding how different it is playing with Gene compared to working with Bostaph, Chuck said, "We played with Gene before on our 'Demonic' record [1997], so we knew exactly what Gene was capable of and what he would bring to the table. We knew that it would definitely bring a different style of drumming, 'cause Gene's a different player than Paul. I think it just worked out. Eric [Peterson, TESTAMENT guitarist] had a lot of the [basic drum patterns] already done [for the new album], and Gene just had to kind of put his style on it."

I agree. Testament never gets old. They are still there showing the new bands (and quite a few of the old bands as well!) how it's really done. I'm glad to hear the mighty Testament is still reliable at a time when very few bands are.

opened up nicely, sounding great & just as I was thinking the mid section was sounding a bit "predictable", they opened up & kicked my ass to the curb again! This tune ended strong, some stellar playing there & looking forward to the whole album knocking us around the rest of the summer.

The music is good - but did Chuck Billy ever find Weapons Of Mass Destruction.. No because there were none, it was all just a Weapon Of Mass Deception wrapped up in a GWB patriotic rambling and lies.

Testament is like that medium well Porterhouse steak, baked potato and a yard of Guiness to top it off. Good golly that's tasty.

Got the feeling this will contend for best of the year.

Damn, Testament is just brutal. They ALWAYS deliver, ALWAYS. Every album they have put out has been great, if not fantastic, or phenomenal. How many bands can you say that about? Not many.

The new track is a steamroller, thick and HEAVY, as usual with Testament.

There are a lot of great releases this year, but this is one of the ones I have been waiting for. I have no doubt this will crush the new Overkill (disappointing) and probably out-gun the new Soulfly and new Kreator (both of which are excellent).

July 31st, mark it down.

I know it's only one song, but this is already better than the last album... Formation, for me, had two badass songs, (Persecuted Won't Forget and Henchmen Ride) the rest were just lackluster for me, cool for other bands, poor for Testament.... but this album, I believe will be a huge improvement. Can't wait!

The Dark Roots of Earth Vs The Phanton Antichrist... then new Slayer. It shall be a good, hell-fee battle.

Great song. Even more optimistic about the new album.

Listen to the mid-tempo parts of the song. Megadeth could learn from this that mid-tempo doesn't have to sound neutered.

Haha, I suspect that song ("Cold Embrace") will be completely badass despite Chuck saying stuff about linking it with Twilight! lol

Oh, and part of the solo is played by Eric. (Though Alex plays the bulk of it) I also strongly suspect that the lead over the main riff is played by Eric. Eric said he would be playing more solos on this album, which I am glad about, as he is very underrated as a lead guitarist. Alex is out of this world though! :)

Metal still rules. In today's candy ass lack of talent, Beyonce, Justin Bieber, ( YUK) thank goodness for all the metal bands who did not sway from the genre. Testament are one of them. Being one of the Original Big Four, this new release solidifies them as one of the greatest Metal Bands ever. Looking forward to seeing you in concert!

In the year of huge disappointments (Fear Factory, Nile) It's great to know that Testament is still better than ever! Fuck to the YES!

I almost agree with you, personally I think the new Nile album is a bloody masterpiece (thats just my opinion). But the new Fear factory album is without doubt, for me the biggest disappointment of the year.
So thanks to Testament for delivering some face-melting metal, that sounds like metal should sound... Like it's was forge in the pits of hell :-) \m/

I love The Electric Age. Wore it the fuck out. But if the rest of Dark Roots is like that single...Testament is gonna have the best release of 2012.

I didn't read many of the other comments, but the ones I did read are overwhelmingly positive, and I couldn't agree more. Testament sets a great example on how to properly combine the new (styles) with the old. I can't see ANY Testament fan new or old complaining about this song...a definite Thrasherpiece.

The solo on this is actually by Eric, not Alex.

No way... Alex's sound and style is unique and unmistakeable. Eric does come in with a solo near the end, but most of it is definitely played by Alex.

Testament wins the thrash lifetime achievement award. They are the most consistent of the big thrash bands and every album is unique. Their peers Metallica, Megachrist, Slayer, Overkill, Exodus, and Anthrax have all dropped the ball too many times.

Awesome fucking song by the way.

In all fairness, Souls of Black, The Ritual, and Demonic are in the "drop the ball" category (at least for myself), but fuck that! The Gathering, Formation of Damnation are awesome, and this upcoming one looks like it can top them both!

I am liking it but not yet totally sold. I hate their logo. Ugh! They had that during Souls of Black. It sounds like it is taken off from where The Gathering left off.

is the best shit I've heard in a looooong ass time. I'm buying at least 2 copies of the deluxe just like Kreator's P.A.. One for the car and the other for the ol' Denon at home. I gotta support the bands I love to counter all the cheap motherfucking theifs out there.

On that note, I wonder how Chris Adler's drumming will sound like for a Testament song?

Sorry "Big 4," these guys SMOKE all of you. I know that whole Big 4 thing is based on record sales, I get it, and hey, fair enough, but Testament really is more consistently badass than any of them.

My only gripe is the blast beat...not a fan, totally sounds like it's just in there "for the sake of it." Just my opinion. But that doesn't change the fact that THIS SONG FUCKIN ROCKS!!!!!!
