GEOFF TATE Breaks Silence On QUEENSRŸCHE Split: 'It's Shocking To Me' - June 26, 2012
QUEENSRŸCHE members Michael Wilton, Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield and Parker Lundgren announced on June 20 that they were parting ways with singer Geoff Tate and recruiting powerhouse vocalist Todd La Torre of CRIMSON GLORY as his replacement. The new QUEENSRŸCHE lineup has already performed live, having played two successful shows in their home city of Seattle under the name RISING WEST.

In an exclusive interview with RollingStone.com, Tate reveals that he was to "shocked" to learn that he was being forced out of the group he founded three decades ago. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

On whether musical differences contributed to the split:

Tate: "Well, this is kind of a weird situation. In the press release they said there were 'creative differences.' But to have creative differences, you have to have two entities or more offering up creative ideas. And that just wasn't the case. QUEENSRŸCHE has always been my idea, starting from the first record. QUEENSRŸCHE is about albums. It's about concepts and themes, and those concepts were mine. [Laughs] I started out with 'The Warning', bringing those ideas in for 'Rage For Order', 'Operation: Mindcrime' . . . all the albums. I write 81% of the music and the lyrics. Of the 144 songs that QUEENSRŸCHE has released, I've written 116 of those. I am the creative energy in the band, especially since Chris [DeGarmo] left. When he was in the band it was more of a shared thing between him and I. But once he left, the burden was on me. I don't consider it necessarily a burden. That's what I do. I'm a creative person. I write everyday and I'm constantly coming up with creative ideas. I present them to the other guys and they go, 'Yeah, sure, that sounds good to us.'"

On rumors that he overheard the other QUEENSRŸCHE members plotting to fire him before a concert in Brazil and that he then pushed guitarist Michael Wilton to the floor and pointed a knife at drummer Scott ROckenfield:

Tate: "Well, you know how the Internet goes . . . The way it went was, we had a gig in Sao Paulo, and before the show we had a meeting in the dressing room. I asked them straight up about the rumors I'd heard about them replacing me. I was definitely concerned about this. What kind of plan was that? Was it serious? What was going on? They said that they weren't planning on replacing me, but they had just fired our manager, our office assistant and one of our guitar techs, who all happened to be my family members. I asked them, 'Why is this happening?' They really couldn't give me a straight answer, or any kind of answer that made any kind of business sense. It seemed like a personal vendetta against me. Anyway, the meeting was short and we went to do the show. I'm getting ready by my station, ready to go on stage, and Scott looks at me and he smirks and says, 'We just fired your whole family, and you're next.' I just lost it. I tried to punch him. I don't think I landed a punch before somebody grabbed me and hauled me to the side. On my way, I managed to shove Wilton, and really, that was it. I cooled down and we did the show, and everything went fine. . . [There was] no knife involved. You can't really get knives into foreign countries."

On the other QUEENSRŸCHE members forming a side project called RISING WEST that was entirely devoted to playing material from the first five QUEENSRŸCHE albums:

Tate: "I looked at that forming of that band as a side project. I was surprised that all four guys went in the same direction. That didn't make such sense to me. That felt like some kind of calculated move, but I can't even speculate what they were thinking. But if they want to do a side project, I'm all about that. I've very supportive of everybody in the band doing side projects. . . [But] I would think if they were gonna do a side project, they should probably write some new songs and present them as a group, and then play some QUEENSRŸCHE songs too. If they wanna do that, that's cool. But to do only QUEENSRŸCHE material and only material that I wrote . . . I don't know. It's kind of a slap in the face. Honestly, I'm not angry over this. I'm more hurt by it all. This has been my life's work. It's been 30 years building this name and this image of the band. All the lyrics and the directions of the albums and the concepts, that is all from me. And to have them do what they're doing and kick me out — God, I didn't realize that these guys were those kind of people. It's shocking to me."

On how he was "fired" from QUEENSRŸCHE and whether the other guys have the right to carry on as QUEENSRŸCHE with another singer:

Tate: "[I was fired] by a legal letter from their attorney to mine. . . We're in a lawsuit right now and it's probably gonna get ugly. I filed a claim a couple of days ago. So it's all going to the legal system now to sort out who is what, and who owns what, and that stuff. . . Well, they shouldn't [book gigs under the name QUEENSRŸCHE until this is resolved]. Definitely. It's a situation where, in my opinion, they're doing everything the wrong way. If there was a dispute over who is in the band, or who owns the band name, I think that stuff should all be worked out before they try to book gigs with the name QUEENSRŸCHE. . . I'm forced to engage in a lawsuit with them now. This is not something I want to do at all. I want to make records and I want to tour and live a creative life. I don't want to be bogged down in some legal hassle. My God, but they're forcing me into it. I have no other way to go. I can't give up my life's work and walk away from it. These are my ideas, my concepts, my life, that I'm writing about. What are they gonna do — hand it to some kid to sing?"

I know he's hated here, but I am 100% "Team Tate". Seems they f'd him over. You can't take the name of the band, when you don't write the music or add anything to the creative side. This seems like a hold up, done strictly to kick Tate out and make more money off of the reputation and history of his songs.

The whole thing is a damm shame.

some covers, then originals & show us who still has the balls in this band!

Geoff Tate doesn't write music, he hires people to do it for him. He is a lyricist, but would be nowhere without Michael Wilton and Chris DeGarmo writing music for him to put lyrics over. He is beyond full of it.

Maybe he means since Degarmo left? Usually it was Geoff with outside writers. a good bulk of the early good shit was Degarmo/TAte, with Wilton in a lot of the time. 84 percent is bullshit. He's the SINGER. Yes concepts and lyrics and vocal melodies, ala Peter Gabriel, but the music? no

..should continue under the Rising West ID & let Tate have the QR name if he wants it. Enough people know who they are so they can still book good gigs and if their original songs are strong they can stand on their own. The whole "2 Great Whites or 2 L.A. Guns" thing is just lame. If Tate wants to continue Queensryche in the Axl Rose model with fill-in guys, I would let him & move on.

It seems that bands get jealous when the front man gets most of the attention and writes most of the music. I think you either deal with it or move on and do something else, but without the band name they have no clout for bookings or album deals. It seems they took the easy route which may keep them going in the short run but probably won't last.

Portnoy's exact quote on Tate:

"I'm tired of being politically correct...

"For the record, Geoff Tate is a two-faced douche bag. Since he has begun doing 'Operation: Mindcrime II' press, he has been consistently bashing DREAM THEATER and even me personally in the press... (why, I have no idea?). But I'm tired of biting my tongue when he obviously can't.

"When he was on Eddie Trunk's show [on Q104.3 FM] Friday night [March 31], he was incredibly rude and insultful [sic] when talking about me off the air to Eddie and [FOZZY singer and former WWE wrestler] Chris Jericho (he having no idea they're my bros)... Eddie and Chris were FUMING at him and Chris immediately texted me from the studio saying he was ready to body-slam him on the spot.

"His new name on this board should be Geoff Taint...

"Screw him...he's now on my shitlist..."

In a follow-up message, Portnoy elaborated on his position with the following:

"Also... for the record before this blows up any further... I have absolutely no issues with the other guys who were always straight-up and cool all throughout the tour and ever since... Scott [Rockenfield, drums] and Eddie [Jackson, bass] in particular are two guys who I really like and am proud to call 'friends'...

"Geoff was, and is, the two-faced BS [bullshit] artist to everybody he comes in contact with...either professionally (or 'un' for that matter) as well as to his poor fans that still believe his bullshit after all these years.

"I'm sorry that such good guys as Scott, Eddie and Michael [Wilton] are being 'led' by this babbling idiot...

"Like I said...I was willing to bite my lip, be professional and politically correct and continue to not EVER say anything bad about him in the press...but Taint-boy had to open his big ass mouth to two of my best bros (Eddie Trunk and Chris Jericho) which was a big mistake and the final straw...

"That's all from me...I'm gonna take a well-earned vacation..."

Prior to this incident, though, I clearly remember Portnoy dissing QR in an interview mainly because he didn't like their post-Mindcrime material. Then, when his comment was mentioned in a subsequent interview with Tate, Tate's exact response was: "Who is Mike Portnoy and why should I care?" So maybe this incident had something to do with Tate dissing Portnoy to his (Portnoy's) friends.

AND ON A RELATED NOTE, I also remember Portnoy dissing Rush and Neil Peart in particular after Neil wasn't thrilled about the release of the "Working Man" tribute CD as he didn't like the idea of record companies or anyone else making money off remakes of Rush songs. Portnoy then retaliated by saying everything Rush did after Signals sucked. Ironically, when Vapor Trails came out, Portnoy--and I don't know how he managed to do this after that comment--was allowed to write some adulatory liner notes for the Japanese release of the album. Talk about two-faced!

In short, I think Portnoy is every bit as two-faced as Tate and probably more so. He throws the first stone, then claims to take the high road and "bite his tongue" when others talk shit about HIM.

that it's going to get SO ugly over the rights, etc. tate is correct that he wrote the lion's share of the band's songs, maybe in collaboration, but he is by far the primary writer in the band. the concepts, etc. also all his. i share the common sentiment that they have sucked for a decade and a half or so at this point, and i'm curious to hear what the other guys will do with a new singer, but i'm not sure either party is entitled to the QR name. Tate can't really hire 4 no-names and do it, and for the other guys, only 3 original members, only one of whom (Wilton) had any really writing input in the band. Maybe let the name die, and carry on as Rising West and Geoff Tate solo.

"I tried to create a theatrical environment for the presentation. And I think people like that. They want to keep seeing that. Without me, that won't happen. I can guarantee that. It won't happen."

Without taking sides, this is an honest statement of truth. I commented in a prior article how Geoff did bring theatricality and charisma to the band and to the stage presentation, and it is going to be lacking, regardless of whether you felt he's gone too far with his wine, cabaret, etc in recent years. And it's a huge loss, IMO.

Todd has a good voice, but there needs to be soul and feeling. We don't know if that will be there yet. Brian Johnson brought it to AC/DC, which is why he is considered a successful replacement. To a certain degree I don't think Ripper brought it to Priest, which is why that didn't last as long.

For anyone who knows about Marillion, it's the same thing. Regardless of how you feel about H material, Hogarth maintained the charisma and theatricality when Fish left. It was a different kind, to be sure, but the essence remained, which is why the H version of Marillion has thrived.

QR was developed in part through Geoff's presence, so that is definitely a loss, regardless of which side you take.

You should take a look at some of the photos and footage from the Queensryche Cabaret. In particular I'd draw your attention to the Geoff Taint wardrobe malfunction. That's some fine theater he brought to the band, he should definitely perform on Broadway.

Also, Marillion has gone so far beyond the early Fish material that they barely play any of it anymore, and after 20 years no one misses those early songs. Without taking sides on Queensryche, they have a steep challenge ahead. Of course Marillion has those 20 years already passed, during which they overcame and surpassed their first 5 years with Fish.

"No one misses those early songs"? Are you kidding me??? That would be like saying "no one misses those early songs" if Rush stopped playing all the songs they wrote up to Moving Pictures or if Queensryche stopped playing all the songs they wrote up to Mindcrime. If Fish ever reunited with Marillion, they wouldn't be playing all the little shitholes that they're playing today (just check out the venues on their current NA tour).

Marillion's songs with Fish were progrssive, memorable and challenging to the listener. Hogarth's songs, though good in their own right, are short, sweet, A&R pieces...the kind Geoff Tate has tried to compose with Queensryche since DeGarmo's departure. And who cares if Hogarth maintained the "charisma and theaticality" of Marillion. In the end, it's the SONGS that matter.

+1 for team Tate.

Im w/ Geoff. Sorry guys.

Hey, who ya thinks gonna win? A metal band full of fifty-somethings w/ a replacement singer, playing songs from yesteryear or a solo artist w/ the ability to write killer songs (you know the ones) and visualize concepts like Geoff?

Btw, I thought Promised Land was a masterpiece. Everything can't be about eating goats and burning down churches and shit.

AND, While Rising West's performance was very good (I LOVED the first CG album and thought noone could ever replace Midnight) I thought Geoffs acoutic thing was kinda awesome.

OK, Flame away ....

Agreed. I have been a casual fan myself, don't know if I ever even bought an album but in the 80's you would hear them all the time. Heres the thing... I know the name Geoff Tate really well but don't know anyone else in the band. They are going nowhere when people realize he isn't in the band.

Look at sales of the last couple QR albums. I guarantee the next one they do with La Torre, be it Queensryche or Rising West, or whatever, will outsell them.

The FUCK are you talking about, "eating goats and burning down churches and shit"? What does that have to do with Queensryche? It sounds to me like you're stating anyone who sides with the rest of the band is a crazed Norwegian blackmetaller who probably wouldn't listen to this band in the first place! Yes, 'Promised Land' was pretty decent, but that was almost 20 years ago, man! QR with Geoff at the helm was going nowhere, and we all fucking know it. Right or wrong, whatever the remainder of the band releases when it's all said and done can't be any worse than what they've put out in the past 15 years or so. So bring on the new stuff with Todd - The rest of you can buy Geoffy's sad bastard Kenny G shit.

Almost sounds like to me that the other guys were fine with the way thing were when Chris was in the band, but when he left it kind of fell on Geoff to carry the load and they didn't like it. However, it also sounds, if Geoff can be believed, that they didn't have the spine to stand up to him, instead letting it build to a point that they finally got rid of him behind his back. Either way, this is all getting pretty childish.

Here's what it comes down to: can "the other four" make more money as Rising West or as Queensryche?

I can sympathize with Geoff, to an extent. I mean, if it went down just like he says, that's pretty shabby. But at the same time, that story about Rockenfield "smirking" and making that remark sounds made up. Hard to picture a grown man actually doing that.

Im sorry, but Tate is full of it. you can go to bmi.com and see for yourselt that Mr. Tate has not written ONE QR song on his own. Second, QR was already a band when Tate joined & the only writing credit he had on the 1st E.P. was the lyrics to "The Lady Wore Black." He's just flat out lying.

This former-glorious band released 4 absolute musical gems
1) the first EP
2) The Warning
3) Rage for Order (my personal favorite, a landmark of progressive heavy music)
4) Operation:Mindcrime (never was too keen on the concept, but the music was great)
Then the got the commercial bug and the dull radio-friendly Empire came out, and out of all the songs on this one, only the title-track hinted at past glory.
After that, meh ... worse and worse ... who's responsible for the band losing its way? Can't be just Tate, as if he was writing this increasingly stinking offal over all these years, the musicians were happy to go along with it for all this time, so they should share blame.
But to my mind, Queensryche is about the great pre-Empire period and if the musicians with Todd are going to play classic QR music again, I hope they come out with the name. Tate can continue with his music and best of luck to him with whatever fans can stand to listen to that stuff.
Todd's a great singer and the musicians helped write those great pre-Empire albums, especially the awesome music, so why shouldn't they continue under the name Queensryche?

Excellent post! Especially the part about rest of the band members going along with Tate's "vision" for so long.

Off hand, I can think of two other bands that made 4 great records and then whimped out: Metallica before they made the Bob Cock-inspired black album, and U2 before they made the radio-friendly Joshua Tree. (Yes, I know the latter isn't metal but it's the same principle.)

I have trouble believing Geoff Tate, dating all the way back to his constantly changing story on the whole 3 Tremors/Trinity thing he was going to do with Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson back in the day. What can I say, haha, I have a long memory.

Halford said they wanted to do it and was going to get the name. Dickinson said not only that they wanted to do it, but that he and Roy Z started writing for the project and pulled the plug after realizing that it was going to take more time/energy than any of them had to spare at the time. Tate? Changed his story a bunch of times and now tells people the whole project was only ever one drunken dinner conversation and nothing more. Like, why lie? That doesn't even make sense when the other guys talked about it in interviews and stuff. So what if they weren't able to actually do the project, it was a cool idea at the time. Just seemed weird that he'd tell such a different story from both Halford and Dickinson. Definitely made me look at Tate a bit sideways.

He contributed a lot to QR and had his day, sure. But I think he's full of it.

Tate's been trying to distance himself from anything metal for a long time now. Which is pretty awkward and also quite stupid, since metal fans are the ones who made him famous and rich. They're also the only ones who give a shit about him or know who he is.

It could be time to retire the name or most likely the guys will get it and give him a smaller percentage than his 25% of everything with QR name on it from here on out. It can all be worked out money wise.

Ben Moody still gets a large percentage of everything with the Evanescence name on it and he hasn't spoken to Amy Lee in years. He was smart enough when he left to make sure of this. It's nice to get a check for doing nothing 4 times a year.

I love Geoffs voice. At its peak he was almost unparelled. I dont think his voice is bad now, but when you have a dislike for the music that made you famous, its time to move on. Its funny that he claims to have written most the music. For a guy who always talks about his dislike for metal, he sure knows how to write some killer metal riffs!! LOL

I already knew Geoff Taint was a fucking asshole, and now we have a new interview with him to really drive the [knife] point home. He thinks Queensryche has always been his idea, even though he was the last original member to join the band and only wrote lyrics. In fact he was the least important member in the band -- go look around on the internet and you will find a hundred guys who can scream like him. The guys who wrote the music and played the instruments made the band, not this asshole. Fucking singers, you gotta be a narcissist and certifiably insane to do what they do, especially this clown.

I can't fucking wait to see the real Queensryche return with Todd on vocals, I have been waiting for the real band to come back for 20 years. Geoff Taint can perform at w[h]ine bars and tell everyone how great he is, and I hope they never take him back.

Since Nevermore is no more, and Loomis has his solo career, if Lundgren happens to not make in the band for whatever reason, I think Loomis would be the perfect replacement. For one, Nevermore had a great chemistry and writing team with Loomis and Dane, and they were always influenced by Ryche a lot anyway (example: Dreaming Neon Black). Plus they would bring a fresh feel to Ryche, along with Todd's vocals, and Wilton could have a writing partner worthy of someone like Degarmo again. And Guess what? The two have already played together on a Pamela Moore album!

Kind of an oddball post, but it just seems to me that thiss would help fill the gap of losing Degarmo and Tate to a certain extent. Wilton and the rest of the guys come up with cool stuff (Especially Wilton) and it would light a fire under all their asses to really reclaim their glory..

As for the Tate stuff, well I just laugh. Its sad though that people may believe he "wrote 80 percent" of stuff when they read it, because they may be casual fans who never read the linear notes.

Undeniably, Genesis is an example of a band who lost their "conceptual/theatrical" member in Peter Gabriel, and its debatable that with the first couple albums with Phil Collins on vocals if they matched the old stuff or not. Either way, they became a new band in essence (and Trick of the Tail through Duke showed the transition) this may happen with Ryche in this area. But its patently ridiculous to say its going to suck or not have musical worth without Tate there. It may be different, but its hard to say without hearing original material.

At least with the new guy, they can play their songs without having to tune them down to fucking Drop z to accomodate the singer...Even Priest tuned down to D for Ripper and they only have to go down a half step for Halford nowadays.

This is pretty much the same scenario Marillion faced when Fish left. Lemme explain... Fish was the singer and lyricist. Fish also came up with the album concepts and presented Mark Wilkinson (artist) ideas for album covers, promos and other stuff. Fish doesn't play any instrument and All the music was written by the musicians in the band (Steve Rothery, Mark Kelly, Ian Mosley and Pete Trewavas). That being the situation, when the dust settled, the Court decided that Fish interest in the Marillion brand was over 50% if I'm not mistaken. So you see, Tate claim may not be so far fetched...

What really surprises me about Tate's statement is that all of the sudden queensryche was his idea, when he was the last member to join and was on a helping hand manner even up to the recording of the ep. In the end, maybe the band members sound a little douchy according to Tate, but we will have to wait for the other side of the story since its well known that Tate is a douche himself.

To be continued....

Ok here's the scoop from an old and die hard Queensryche fan up until the last piece of absolute shit called Dedicated to Chaos.

The band was DONE creatively. They were wasting away for years coming up with the odd cool tune, but were never able to put out a masterpiece of an album since Promised Land. Why? Many reasons:
1. DeGarmo left a huge void in the band because most of his songwriting was great (with the exception of a new change on Hear in the Now Frontier)
2. Lack of good producers. Tate wanted to be in control and oversee everything making his type of records...which were not very metal in general.
3. The fact that Tate took on the role of leader is what made the band worse...reason being he never wanted or allowed the other members to contribute to the albums, songs, or lyrics. He wanted to be supreme being, and hired outside guns to write most of the last 3 albums. Jason Slater, Kelly Grey etc are NOT queensryche, yet they were hired by Geoff to write the songs. Failure evident, when you have talent like Wilton, Eddie, and Scott who could make amazing music if they were given the chance again. They plain and simply were not allowed to contribute and control the musical direction of the band in years.

Geoff was fired due to the Tate family running the band, the fact that he had trouble over the last decade even singing the old songs because his voice is turning to shit, the fact that he would not let it be a democratic band again, and the fact that his EGO is everything.
It was about time. I loved Geoff back in the day, but realized he became a shadow of his former self vocally.

I don't believe for a second that Scott told him that just before they went on stage. It sounds like a bullshit lie or slant on the truth.

I hope the boys win the lawsuit and continue on to restore a nearly destroyed band name. Let's also hope De Garmo helps or contributes to the new band with awesome singer Todd.

Horns up to Wilton, Scott, and gang!!!

there's not one person anywhere outside of the Taint family who will believe Geoff's version of events, as posted on this Blabber article. Usually a singer gets a lot of the fans, but in this case we will see an astounding exodus from the Geoff Taint fanclub.

I think one of the posters above nailed it when he said the side that expends the massive public effort to convince everyone that they are in the right is usually the lying side. Geoff obviously has a second career as a lawyer ahead of him. Can't wait for the return of Queensryche.

GEOFF FOR ME WAS THE GREATEST SINGER EVER.
AND HE IS QUEENSRYCHE AS HALFORD IS JUDAS.
AND HIS VOICE WAS THE 80% OF THE QUEENSRYCHE SONGS.
THE LASTS RECORDS WERE BAD, BECAUSE THE SONGS WERE MADE TO BE SINGED BY HIM IN HIS ACTUAL VOICE CONDITION.

AND THE GUYS WANT TO KEEP QUEENSRYCHE ALIVE, AND THEY KNOW IT WAS ENDINIG WHIT GEOFF VOICE.

I think Geoff is the only one who is really shocked here.

The creative force in the band? He was the guy the original band recruited who wasn't really into metal, but had a good voice. Him gaining influence/control in the band was the Problem. It has been rectified. I mean look at what the band became. The rest of the band wants to get back to metal and the roots of Queensryche? Good for them.

I'll support the other guys nomatter what the band ends up being legally called. Fuck Geoff Tate. This guy is a cancerous mole on the ass of metal. Completely full of shit, egotistical as hell, and can't sing worth a damn anymore. Completely useless.

This is a pretty fucked up situation, and pretty much how I read into it upon reading the band's statement a few days ago.

Split due to creative differences? I don't think so. Given that Tate writes virtually all of the material, it just sounds like the band was pissed off that Tate was writing material that wasn't catering to their audience and/or making them popular. If they were angry about it, they should have tried to write some new material that would fit their needs.

Well, someone might say, "You're wrong through, even if the band tried to offer any new material, Tate would just veto it." Maybe, but not likely given that the other 4 members formed a band called Rising West and had only planned on playing Queensryche songs. If they had new material and new ideas to give, they should have presented them with Rising West. But, like Tate noted, that's not what they were doing. They were using Tate's old Queensryche material that everyone liked and essentially covering it. Congrats-a-fucking-lations. Very creative.

It's clear that the other band members in Queensryche are motivated by money and greed. If they didn't like the direction Tate was taking them in, they should have left. Instead, they decided to move the creator and his family out of the way in order to milk his past successes. Here comes the raping of the band formally known as Queensryche. I hope Tate wins the lawsuit, and I hope those motherfuckers are not entitled to anything that is Queensryche. They don't deserve shit for what they are trying to do. Robbing a man blind of his art. How disgraceful.

Whatever, what the fuck do I know.

TEAM TATE

I have known Tate from when I lived in Tacoma and have been a fan of early QR. I can say that Chris and Tate were the creative force and the driver of the QR sound.

I would love to see Chris and Tate return to the early QR to Empire sound and style. OM in my opinion is one of the greatest albums period.

Shocked. Saddened. Hurt. Surprised. Bitter. All describe how Tate's feeling right now based on his words above. Oddly enough, these words also exactly describe how your fans have felt with each subsequent release after Empire until finally, we gave up and became numb. Tate is put up there with names like Dickinson and Halford, as he should. He's got a killer and very original sounding voice. Queensryche should be on the same level as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. The main difference is that Priest and especially Maiden care deeply for the fans and they do it for the fans and it shows. I can respect Tate's need to create and be free like a birdee and wheee! look at meeee! and shit like that, but come on Mr. 81%... Side project supporter.... save that shit for your solo records on the side then. After all, it's Wot you do. Call Maiden predictable, or Priest or AC/DC or Motorhead...call them all creatively bankrupt if you want but I have way more respect for those bands for sticking to their people. The ones that put them where they are. The people that GAVE the career to you that you're so shocked and hurt that it's being encroached on by the other guys that heve worked every bit as hard as you the bring Queensryche music to the people over the years. The difference now is that the other guys have known the fans' unhappiness for a long time and now they're answering the call with Rising West...or whatever they end up being called. I'll always respect Tate's talent and always love the first 5 records, but he's just not Queensryche anymore. Not the one I'd ever listen to again.

Holy shit this is crazy with you guys. listen, the proof will be the next recording of both bands. I gotta say, it's obvious who the best writer was for queensryche, and that is chris. he and geoff formed a good writing team, as did wilton on his own and with the others. yeah, geoff comes off like a douche in the press and in interviews, but sometimes the asshole is the best writer in the bunch. don't know if that's the case here, we will certainly find out.

only time will tell if new QR material w/o tate goes anywhere........kinda cool hearing the old QR w/o tate.

tate is the voice and will do fine w/o the boys from QR....kinda think his solo stuff will not be like QR anyway so will he want the name anyway?

So who will get to use the QR name ? let the courts decide

love QR ! but are they not just a little past there prime anyway

seems like all boys in QR are acting like a bunch of babies

and never let the WIFE control things ....probably the start of all QR problems taking years to blow-up

so fighting for the QR name is only good if you want to do old QR tunes a living

1. For those who want DeGarmo to return to making music (whether with Tate or the other guys), dream on... HE'S NOT INTERESTED. He's happy as a pilot now and living off the millions he made when QR was actually relavent.

2. Tate's probably re-recording his next solo album as we speak--making it sound more metal/hard rock.

3. A few years from now (maybe sooner), Tate will re-unite with QR and

"TATE IS QUEENSRYCHE, THERES NO DISCUSSION ABOUT IT."

There IS discussion about it. That's just your opinion. Do you really think that Priest is Halford? Who wrote the material? I think it has been a team effort between Halford, Downing and Tipton. As for Tate, he mostly writes lyrics and vocal melodies, I think. That's of course a part of the music, but he doesn't write riffs, guitar melodies etc. He needed and needs help in that department. Tate has ideas that he gives to songwriters and asks them to write a song that has a certain kind of an atmosphere. Ask anyone, ask a certain producer/songwriter who has written music for QR for the last three albums. You can see his comments at the Anybodylistening.net forum. SO, Tate doesn't write songs by himself. Thus, he has NOT written 81 per cent of the music. If you look at the credits for the albums up to Empire, Chris DeGarmo has 38 credits, Wilton 25 and Tate 35. There's 53 songs, out of which 2 are covers. That leaves 51 songs. Of those, NOT ONE is single-handedly written by Tate. There's always either DeGarmo or Wilton involved. So, the music of QR up to Empire was NOT written by Tate alone. A part of the songs were co-written by Tate. Actually, if you make a search for QR at the BMI.com website, you can see that Tate hasn't wrote a single song for QR by himself. That's a FACT! Tate has, of course, been the voice of Queensryche and that's something you cannot argue about. If you cannot accept anyone else as a QR singer, that's fine of course, but the fact is that Tate has never been QR and he has never written a QR song by himself.

Self-criticism is not mr Tate forte! 10 years building the name Queensryche 20 years draging it through the mud with crap albums and songs that no one wants to hear except mr Tate himself.

Crying out in the press how much he hates metal and how stupid and narrow minded Queensryches fans are who do not love the Queensryche albums that came after Empire.

Looking for the first time in 20 years to buy a new Queensryche album

... It's always a sad situation when a band is loosing a member, especially when trouble seems to be brewing.
I have been a Maiden fans since I ways 12 years old, and remember when Dickinson left/was kicked out or whatever, and replaced by Bayley. I'm not the biggest Queensryche fan (hate me :-) ), but one thing is sure... You guys are lucky that Mr. Tate is replaced by someone who actually can sing!!!

So good luck to Mr. Tate and the guys in Queensryche

Hahaha good one...... There is absolutly nothing wrong with Dianno, the 2 first maiden albums fucking kills... And in some strange way your right, I personally don't think Dickinson is doing the Dianno songs any good. He sings them much to "nice" they miss the rawness of Dianno.... \m/

BTW, what have God to do with it? ;-)

most I have laughed in a long time. I love how Tate talks about the business side of things and how most of this started when the band wanted to change the merchandising company. I DO NOT PERSONALLY KNOW ANY BAND MEMBERS . So we are all in the same situation speculating about many things. But I do know that Tate had installed is family in every aspect of the business from the merchandising to management so that the band was paying and supporting his extended family. So yeah, the rest of the guys probably were a bit concerned that the Tate clan kept getting the lions share of the revenue by making business decisions that lined their own pockets.

First off, it's amazingly easy to get knives into just about anywhere. Like Taint wouldn't just put it in a guitar case and have it loaded with the equipment. Come on. And he thinks he didn't land a punch? STFU dude, you pulled a knife.

He basically admits that DeGarmo wrote all the good shit, and Taint writes the garbage. When DeGarmo left, this band fell of a cliff. Look how shitty the last album was!

This whole scenario reminds of something....hmmmm what is it??

Is this Portnoy 2.0?

In my opinion, Tate is the modern day Dennis DeYoung. Both sang for great bands, got full of themselves, and then turned the band into pussies.

Forget the supposed knife incident and look at Tate's track record for the last 5 years. Cabaret? Wine tasting? Telling the audience they suck? The remaining members guys want to rock and get back to what made the fans crazy and loyal to them. They've been reduced to a pop band with Michael Bolton as their leader.

I cant believe i see so many people taking sides. Yeah! Geoffs voice isnt what it used to be, but there are not many singers who can keep that range going over a long period of time. I saw Queensryche last year and Geoff nailed everything. Take hold of the flame sounded incredible. I have seen concert footage of Geoff sounding good and not so good. I am also a huge Ozzy fan but lets get real, his voice isnt what it used to be either. I find it hard to believe that the rest of the band had the power to fire everyone from Geoffs family but not allowed to contribute any ideas. I really dont know who contributed more or less in the band because I wasnt in it. I dont know how some of these posts claim to know what went on. Todd sounds good, but without Geoff they should just use the rising west name and Geoff should just go by his name. I am not a huge fan of the last few albums but I am not going to sit here and say i know who to blame. I mean they havent been rollin out the hits since Parker joined either. So i guess we will wait and see how good the song writing will be without Geoff. I wish both sides good luck

Geoff get over yourself. Theres other people in the band too. You not the sole creative force here. After Chris left everything went down hill because you took control. You were the last member to join that means your not the a founding member. Sure your a great singer. But your voice has diminished as all great singers do in your type of singing.

Now as for you acting all shocked your a hack. I know a guy whos wife you hit up on while hw was getting you coke. He came back and knocked you out of your snake skin boots. I heard about this and then i had a room mate tell me about it 20 years later and i laughed because i had heard about it years before and wondered who had punched you out. And wondered why. You thought because you were a big shot you could take that which was not yours.

I met Scott, and Eddie both very nice people. Scott is very very quite. Eddie is talkative. I worked with one of Scott's old girlfriend's she said he was way cool. Your trying to smear them. This is gonna be another Mike Portnoy and another Rodger Waters and Jack Russle.

Its to bad bands cant just split and be happy for one another.

Forgot to say the others press release was warm we wish him well. Hmmmmm. I love your singingGeoff and i still think your grat. But lets face it you were on a path the 3 remaining founding members didnt want anymore. I only hope they put out kick ass music and not come up short. Time will tell. I will say Todd in Crimson Glory nails all of Midnights stuff too. He not only sings the songs but he also nails the little things in the original recordings. Every sigh or small quip or squelch that made the songs that Tate forgot about that made the song magical. Like in Child of Fire in the mellow section Todd hit every little whine sigh and all. He brought back that which was missing.
