METALLICA Performs 'Escape' Live For First Time Ever; Pro-Shot Footage Available - June 24, 2012
METALLICA's two-day festival Orion Music + More kicked off last night (Saturday, June 23) at the popular Atlantic City, New Jersey concert venue Bader Feld. METALLICA is headlining both nights of Orion Music + More and playing "Ride The Lightning" in its entirety one night and "The Black Album" in its entirety the other. This will be the only time the band will perform these albums in North America in 2012.

In an interview with CBS Local, METALLICA lead guitarist Kirk Hammett said, "I know 'Ride The Lightning' forwards and backwards. It's not like 'The Black Album,' where there are three or four songs that we rarely play. Over the course of the years, we've played most of 'Ride The Lightning', except for one song we've never done, 'Escape'. It was pretty easy [to re-learn those songs]. We put way more time into learning 'The Black Album' than 'Ride The Lightning'."

Video footage of METALLICA performing the song "Escape" live for the first time ever last night (Saturday, June 23) at the Orion Music + More festival can be seen below.

Orion Music + More features multiple live music stages plus a lifestyle element that reflects each of METALLICA's bandmembers' many personal interests.

When asked why METALLICA would want to do their own festival, guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield said in a recent interview, "First of all, because we can. Why wouldn't you? We're just trying to bring a little more of a mix to what is going on. . . . I think the Europeans are able to look at a festival more as an event than 'my favorite band is playing.' We're not necessarily trying to reproduce that in the States, but we'd like to bring a little taste of that here."

Regarding the significance of the "Ride The Lightning" and "Metallica" albums, Hetfield said, "'Ride The Lightning' started to splinter us off from your SLAYERs and other thrash bands. A song called 'Fade To Black' was an instant thorn in the side of the metal community. It was the first veering off the studded path. [The Black Album] became the album, I guess, that people needed to have. It's a gateway for people to get into METALLICA."

They sounded great in that video! Even James's vocals were good; he must not have taken much time to church 'em up like all the other old songs. Nice job by Metallica!

If Metallica ever get around to playing Frayed Ends of Sanity (which I think they will, based on the clip above), then I think they'll have played every song off their first five albums at least once over the past decade, aside from (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth.

That's fucking cool as hell. Say what you want about Metallica but they're more adventurous with their setlists than most of their contemporaries.

Now they just have to play Load and Reload in their entirety.

Awful, awful song. There's a reason they've never played it live before. It's the worst song on Ride the Lightning. That album would be perfect without it.

You're right. It IS the worst song off Ride the Lightning, but I'd still rather hear it live rather than anything written AFTER And Justice For All.

Nicely done. Always did like this song, probably would have fit in better on the Black Album than RTL but whatever, still a great tune.

Pretty sure they've never played Dyer's Eve
Because Lars can't (drum loops in studio)
They'll never do Justice in its entirety because of this

Lars sounds a little bit tighter in this show than previous abominations I've heard him do. Can't tell if he played the double kick pattern from the record in Fight Fire or not though....
I love Escape & Trapped Under Ice since I was 12 yrs old. Took to long to play 'em live.

I always felt Ride The Lightening benefited from having this mid-tempo thrasher on there. It's a great song but I agree with the poster above that it was way heavier on the album, sounds a bit funny now.

And yes, we know, James hates Escape, we all read that same article on here.

He hates it cause Dave wrote every note and lyric. I could totally see Dave singing this one. They could of put it on SFSGSW.

This song is credited to Hetfield, Ulrich and Hammett, so where do you get that shit about it being written by Dave from? Metallica never robbed Dave of his writing credits for the band.

This song was one of them that got into Metallica. I really liked the lyrics especially. Pantera's 'Live in a Hole' has a similar theme too: felling different and against the mainstream because of the music you like, and sets you appart from normal society.

Musically it's not such a bad song, but it's just the chorus that buggers it for me. It comes off a little cheesy. James is correct in disliking it.

Ride The Lightning is of course a great album regardless. All of Metallica's releases from the 1980s are essential if you are a metal fan.

Unfortunately, I played those albums to death back in the day so I don't listen to them that often anymore.

I know. I'll smoke some weed and listen to RTL right now. Good advice.

Where would I be without you guys?

I always thought this song was one of their weakest song on all 4 first albums, now I'm convinced of it. I'll admit that since James sobered up he's a much better singer but this one was horrible. Boring song, horrible singing... I totally understand why they never wanted to play this track live.

I've always liked that song. I guess he'd consider the chorus too positive to be cool. Especially considering their subject matter in the 80s.

I dig the song - love the entire album. However - this performance was horrible. The tempo was fucked up. James sounds utterly bad here. I suppose I should not be surprised.
