IRON MAIDEN Singer Says 'Maiden England' Tour Opener Was 'Truly Magical' - June 23, 2012
Close to 14,000 fans turned out in force this past Thursday night, June 21 for the opening show of IRON MAIDEN's "Maiden England North American Tour" in Charlotte, North Carolina, setting the spectacular tour off to a flying start.

Singer Bruce Dickinson commented: "We haven't played in Charlotte since 1988 so we really didn't expect anything like this number of people would come and see us! And what a terrific audience! Truly magical. We had expected this to be a sort of lower key warm-up show to get the production, pyro and stuff into shape, and ourselves too! It was our first show since those at London's 02 Arena last August so band and crew can all get a bit rusty. But a crowd this loud and supportive soon blew the cobwebs away. Thank you, Charlotte!"

Bass player Steve Harris added: "It was fantastic to see so many fans since we were last here with the original 'Seventh Son' tour 24 years ago. Some of the songs we've not performed for many years and the crowd reaction was just amazing, especially among the younger fans hearing them live for the first time. A response like that on the first night was incredible. We're totally knocked out and can't wait for the rest of the tour!"

Courtney Devores from The Charlotte Observer commented: "The crowd response was that of fans that had been waiting over two decades (and in some cases their entire lives), The reaction to 'The Trooper' . . . was arguably unparalleled throughout the night."

Creative Loafing's Jeff Hahne called the show "a feast for the eyes and ears... MAIDEN isn't on a nostalgia trip this time round. They're putting everything they've got into the music, getting the crowd involved at every chance and loving every minute of it."

The band's setlist was as follows:

01. Moonchild
02. Can I Play With Madness
03. The Prisoner (performed for first time since September 21, 1991)
04. 2 Minutes To Midnight
05. Afraid To Shoot Strangers (performed for first time since December 12, 1998)
06. The Trooper
07. The Number Of The Beast
08. Phantom Of The Opera
09. Run To The Hills
10. Wasted Years
11. Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son (performed for first time since December 12, 1988)
12. The Clairvoyant
13. Fear Of The Dark
14. Iron Maiden

Encore:

15. Aces High
16. The Evil That Men Do
17. Running Free

The 34-date "Maiden England" tour is the band's most extensive visit to North America for many years and includes a number of other cities the band have not played in a very long time such as Atlanta, Milwaukee, Buffalo, Indianapolis, Salt Lake City and Sacramento, and places like Sarnia (Ontario, Canada) and Cadott, Wisconsin where they have never visited before. The tour is based on the band's "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son Tour", with a setlist almost exclusively from the 1980s featuring all the classic songs and hits. The same spectacular stage set as was used on the original 1988 tour has been recreated, complete with a magnificent light show, pyro and a newly reincarnated Eddie!

The extraordinary and legendary ALICE COOPER is IRON MAIDEN's very special guest on all shows up to July 21. After that date, special guest will be COHEED AND CAMBRIA, the inspiring, cutting-edge band from New York.

do whatever you can to catch 'em live while you can, it's a spectacular show. Not sure how much longer these legends will be touring, particularly in America.

My thoughts exactly!! Bought my ticket for the 4th of July concert at SummerFest in Milw, WI. knowing that this might be the last time Maiden comes to my home state. Last time they were here was back in 2000 & I regretted missing that show ever since. I have redeemed myself with 19th row center stage. CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!

Must be feeling really ambitious this tour. He is going to sing Aces High at the end of a 2 hour set? That's a tall order for any singer, let alone a guy who is 53.

Seriously, more power to him. I think that's awesome.

Looks like a great show, although Bruce sounds pretty well exhausted on Aces High...understandable I guess, after having to sing such a challenging song at the end of opening night.

Looking forward to Tuesday night, that's for sure!

I hate to be one of those "setlist whiners", but the more I look at it, the more irritated I get by Steve Harris' lack of real daring.

I mean...TETMD (2006, 2009 and 2011), CIPWM (2004 and 2008) and The Clairvoyant (2003, 2008, 2009) have ALL been played more than once in the past decade.

So really, Seventh Son is the only song from that album that they haven't played in over 20 years. This is the SEVENTH SON tour and they're only adding one song from that album.

Infinite Dreams really seemed like a no-brainer addition. Afraid to Shoot Strangers is nice, but it's a '90s song.

Running Free? They ended shows on the Final Frontier tour with that song as well. Why not Sanctuary?

2M2M and The Trooper could stand to be retired for one tour. They skipped RTTH on the last tour, so I understand why they put that one back in.

The've got SOOO many great songs and they only pick from a select few on every tour. It's a damn shame they aren't more adventurous. But like I said, I'm going to have a fucking blast either way.

I was one of the lucky people who was able to be in Charlotte for the first show of the tour and Maiden were just perfect. I've been going to see them since 1983 and this was the best show I've ever seen them perform. They had more fireworks and fire than they've ever used before plus the stage set and Eddie's were simply incredible. This show is worth every penny of the $85. People, these guys are not going to be touring like this in America. We know this because they simply have not been doing it for years. Pay the money and go! I've already bought another ticket for the show in northern Virginia. It's worth it...GO!

Jesus fucking christ! Can't people just enjoy something instead of saying "I wish they would play..." or "It would have been better if..." What ever happened to just seeing something and letting it take you away? When did everyone get so damn critical that something as awesome as a Maiden show can't completely please them? After years of watching Maiden dvd's, I was blown away to finally get to see them in person. My only complaint, it was really freaking hot outside, but I didn't care because it was a chance to see Alice Cooper and Iron Maiden and a chance to escape the monotony of every day life for just a few hours.

And to everyone who kept saying "Maiden didn't play Hallowed Be Thy Name because Bruce didn't think the audience was into the show enough," just read this article and shut the fuck up! It was opening night of the tour and they played to us for TWO HOURS! I figured they were either too tired to come back out and add one more song to an already awesome setlist, or perhaps something was wrong technically so they called it a night. I'm sure this isn't the first time that happened, and I'm sure it won't be the last.

I really wish they would ditch Can I play with Madness and add Infinite Dreams or The Prophecy, Can I Play with Madness such a horrible song, really the only weak song on the entire 7th son album.

Unfortunately they will always play The Trooper. As much as us die hards hate hearing it live, 99 percent of the crowd acts like they have never heard it live before when they play it and go crazy.

Running Free should be removed as well and Hallowed Be Thy Name should be put back in

And yes 2 Minutes to midnight.. yawn.

How about Killers?

I never get tired of The Trooper, but if it was between that song and Infinite Dreams for just ONE tour, then hell yes, give me Infinite Dreams!

2M2M is another song that is overplayed, but honestly, when I'm at the show and Adrian starts playing the riff, I'm totally into it. I don't think it's possible for me to get bored at a Maiden show no matter which songs they play.

All I'm saying is that this is a SPECIAL tour, and it would have been cool if they stretched themselves out a bit and dug a few more songs out of the mothballs.

They have been willing to ditch their big hits for certain tours, which I really admire, but they didn't go far enough with this setlist IMO.

Like I said, I am going to enjoy every second of the show when I see them, but it just would have been nice to hear one or two more rarities.

BOO HOO ! I wish they would dump the Maiden songs and play some Megadeth songs. They haven't played Megadeth in ever!

How about a nice cup of shut the fuck up!

Maiden rules no matter what they play. You just can't please everyone all the time. If you people are such die hard fans to be complaining about the set list why the hell haven't you been seeing this band live for the last few tours (decades) when they have mixed it up rather nicely?

Maiden hasn't mixed anything up rather nicely outside of performing AMOLAD and maybe the BNW tour. I'm grateful they opened here in Charlotte and they did put on a hell of a show, as always, but as far as mixing it up setlist-wise I beg to differ. You tools need to research your shit before posting crap, or go back to listening to your schenker material (which anything post-blackout pretty much sucks ass). I saw them up in NYC in '99 at Hammerstien for the Ed Hunter tour, and guess what? 10 of the songs on this tour were played on Ed Hunter tour, and probably almost every tour after that. So before you spew shit about us longtime die hard Maiden fans "whining" for a better selection of songs that aren't so tired, know what you're talking about.

I love the band and their music, and have travelled from NY, NJ DC and FL to see them over the years, so I know wtf I'm talking about when I hear "Run the the Hills" I think Run for a piss and beer break. So I have the right to complain, and if I knew ahead of time that the "surpises" that they mentioned outside of the staples for the Maiden England 88 tour were going to be the tired ones then I might not have bought a ticket. I'm not going to go ape shit for "Afraid..." as I would for 'Where Eagles Dare" as I said in another article.

my post should read "travelled to NY, NJ, DC, FL from the armpit known as the Southeast." All of the top tier bands skip the Southeast, or the Carolinas for the most part.

If you think you're such a die hard fan "after years of watching maiden dvds" you're pretty full of yourself. A die hard fan gets into a car or on an airplane to catch them live.
DVD's huh? Sad, but then again the anathema screen name tells the story.

The reason I've been watching the dvd's for years instead of hopping in a car or on a plane to go see them or any other band for that matter is because I have had a full time job since I graduated from college and I had been working all through high school and college. On top of that, I have been dealing with a lot of family health issues in this time frame as well. So, while music is an important part of my life, there are other things more important to me like doing something with my life and taking care of my family.

Now, there is no way you could have known this because you don't know me (I'm assuming). But, I'm just putting this out there so you know I'm not the typical Blabbermouth poster who has no life and does nothing but get on here and talk shit all day. In fact, after this post, I may not even see this discussion again.

Wow, you travel to see a band, good for you. It's so rare to do that since Maiden play right down the street from all of us every tour. Like I said BOO fucking HOO - cry me a river. If you think that any band should play YOUR choices, check the setlist again and let me know how that works for you.

The only songs on this setlist that haven't seen any real action are '7th son', 'Prisoner', and 'Afraid to Shoot Strangers'.

The rest have been played to death.

But Maiden are cowards when it comes to the setlist. They wouldn't dare play something outrageous like 'Alexander the Great' or 'Infinite Dreams', lol.

I was there .. Overall it was one of best shows (CROWD ENERGY) I have seen in area in a very very long time.
Sounds sucked for Moonchild and 2 minutes but once sound man finally got it dialed in it was awesome.
Bruce's voice may have been lacking in some parts but you have to give the man props, he never stops entertaining and the band was strong as ever.
May go to see them in DC as well.
Alice Cooper put on a great show as well.
