MARDUK: New Audio Interview With MORGAN STEINMEYER HÅKANSSON - June 23, 2012

The "Vinland Radio" show recently conducted an interview with guitarist Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson of Swedish black metallers MARDUK. You can now listen to the chat below.

MARDUK's 12th studio album, "Serpent Sermon", sold around 800 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 44 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

MARDUK's previous CD, "Wormwood", opened with around 650 units to enter the Heatseekers chart at No. 99.

How does a washed up shit band like Rush sell 100,000 records and Marduck releases a masterpiece like Serpent Sermon and it's essentially ignored?

I swear, there's no justice in this world!

You might like Marduk better than Rush, and that's fine. But it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Rush is infinitely more talented than Marduk.

To put it very simply, there is a big difference between the acceptability of a classic rock band and a satanic black metal band. We are a small minority in the music world.

Rush and Marduk are both awesome, obviously for different reasons.

I'm positive that the members of both bands would readily admit that they could not effectively play each others' music.

Marduk wouldn't be able to pull off prog rock the way Rush does, and Rush could never do a whooshing, sustained blast beat the way Marduk does. I can't attribute that to one band being more talented than the other, each band is highly skilled at their chosen craft.

I think I know what you're trying to say but you should have used a better example than Rush. You could have said why do false "Metal" bands like Asking Alexandria, I Killed The Prom Queen, Veil Of Maya, I Wrestled A Bear Once, etc etc sell more than Marduk?! Rush earned their successful fan base over a period of about 40 years now. Same thing goes for other bands like AC/DC, Judas Priest, Scorpions...

i tell you why this didnt sell very good....because it sucks!! black metal is a joke! this is nothing more than bullshit noise, blah, blah, satan, blah, blah, suck satans dick! this is the worse sounding shit ever. 800 " real metal" fans bought this. it must be real sad to sit alone and worship satan by yourself.

I'm no Rush fan by any stretch, admittedly. I can appreciate what they do and for how long they've been doing it, but it's easy to see how they sold as many units as they did, and it's a testament to their longevity and ability considering how long they've kept being relevant in the music world. What's really both baffling and depressing is the fact that a shit band like Lamb of God can shift units like that. Now that truly shows that music is in a sad state of affairs.
