IRON MAIDEN Kicks Off 'Maiden England World Tour' In Charlotte - June 21, 2012
British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN kicked off the "Maiden England World Tour" earlier tonight (Thursday, June 21) at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Charlotte, North Carolina. The trek closely mirrors, in terms of production and content, the original 1988 concert video of the same name, shot on the "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son Tour". This opening section of the world tour is the band's most extensive visit to North America for many years and includes a number of cities the band have not played in a very long time, such as Atlanta, Buffalo, Indianapolis and Salt Lake City.

The band's setlist was as follows:

01. Moonchild
02. Can I Play With Madness
03. The Prisoner (performed for first time since September 21, 1991)
04. 2 Minutes To Midnight
05. Afraid To Shoot Strangers (performed for first time since December 12, 1998)
06. The Trooper
07. The Number Of The Beast
08. Phantom Of The Opera
09. Run To The Hills
10. Wasted Years
11. Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son (performed for first time since December 12, 1988)
12. The Clairvoyant
13. Fear Of The Dark
14. Iron Maiden

Encore:

15. Aces High
16. The Evil That Men Do
17. Running Free

Fan-filmed video footage of the concert can be seen below.

"Maiden England" marks the third chapter in the history of IRON MAIDEN, a journey which began in 2004 with "The Early Days" DVD and subsequent 2005 "Early Days Tour". Part two followed in 2008 with the "Live After Death" DVD — the seminal 1984 concert recorded at Long Beach Arena in California during the "World Slavery Tour" — and the band embarking on their groundbreaking "Somewhere Back In Time World Tour 2008/9", which saw them play to over two million fans in almost 40 countries.

Comments vocalist Bruce Dickinson: "We have great fun playing the history of MAIDEN tours because it gives us an opportunity between new albums to go out and play songs from our earlier catalogue. It's always fantastic seeing the crowd reaction from a new generation of fans who have never experienced some of these tracks performed live before, and of course we know our longstanding fans will enjoy seeing the original 'Seventh Son Tour' revisited — with many other surprises! Our intention is to play about two thirds of the original track list of 'Maiden England', including some songs we have not played live in a very, very long time, plus other favourites we just know the fans are going to want to hear! We always try to give our fans a great show musically, but we have always tried to make it as entertaining and memorable an experience as we can visually. And we all feel this show is going to do that splendidly!"

The extraordinary and legendary ALICE COOPER is IRON MAIDEN's very special guest on all shows up to July 21. After that date, special guest will be COHEED AND CAMBRIA, the inspiring, cutting-edge band from New York.

That, to me, is worth the price of the show right there.

Here's a first: They left out Hallowed Be Thy Name! I'd still take it over Run to the Hills or Running Free any day.

Surprised they left out Infinite Dreams too!

I hope they honour the very underrated Fear of the Dark album in the same way on a future tour.

That was also the first thing I thought... "No Hallowed!?!? WTF!?"
I thought that was one of the main staples of their shows for years now?
I mean, we can sit here and make our own set lists for ages but Hallowed was just one of those songs you just have to play, even if you're tired of it

Seeing them in 2 week for 2 show. Cant wait. No Hallowed kinda of sucks but the setlist is very good. They mix it up from tour which i great. Too many bands that have been around for a while do the same greatest hits set. I am glad that Maiden is on of the band that mix thing up.

Actually they do have the confidence, only every other tour is a "greatest hits" tour, the last one was definetely not.

Anyway I can't believe they didn't play "hallowed", I read once that said that Steve Hairris and Nikko McBrain would never play a concert without it. I wish they would have played still life(played on the original tour of seventh son), or flight of the icarus in place of 2 minutes though.

And where's Alice Cooper's playlist.

You obviously don't understand how these Maiden "period tours" go. This is a setlist of songs that are all (with the exception of Fear of the Dark) from their 80s albums. Also, they seemed to have plenty of confidence in their recent albums when they did all of A Matter of Life and Death back in '06 and probably half of the Final Frontier back in '10. Try to know what you're talking about before you post idiotic opinions in a public forum.

The more you talk, the more YOU look like an idiot. I remember when they played the entire MoLaD album and everyone I talked to HATED that tour. It pissed off a lot of fans. Just because they forced that album down our throats doesn't mean the band had confidence in the music. Maybe YOU should know what you're talking about before you post idiotic opinions in a public forum.

Just because some people didn't like it in no way means the band didn't have confidence in the material. In fact, it means the exact opposite. If they didn't have confidence in the songs, they wouldn't have played THE ENTIRE FUCKING ALBUM when they knew it would piss off douchebags like you. And I do know what I was talking about. I was at that show and have been at every single Maiden tour for the last decade. Your opinion does not equal fact. Thanks for playing!

You and the "bong warrior" must be smoking the same dope. I found the following article in the Blabbermouth archives:

"IRON MAIDEN Drummer Defends Band's Decision To Play Entire New Album Live - Oct. 14, 2006"

The key word is "defends" meaning Nicko was on the defensive when questioned about the decision to play the entire MoLaD on tour. Does that sound like he was confident about the new album? Do you think he would have to "defend" a decision to play the entire Piece of Mind or Powerslave album on tour? Hell no.

I have to say that it has been easy to disprove anything you say so maybe you should debate with someone who is more on your level of intellect like the "bong warrior".

Why would he defend something he wasn't confident in? Also, you act as if Blabbermouth isn't known for making sensationalist headlines in order to get a rise out of morons, such as yourself. On top of all that, all you provided was a headline, without even one quote from said article. You've proven nothing. Are you too feminine for a sports reference? If not, here's one for you: the New England Patriots have one of the best offenses in the history of the NFL. Now, when Tom Brady and the offense is not on the field, the defense is (with the slight exception of Special Teams). By your logic, if Bill Belechick had any real faith in Brady and the offense, he wouldn't even bother playing his defense, would he?

On top of all that, you say I should debate with Bongwarrior, seeing as we have the same "level of intellect." I don't think you understand what the word 'debate' means. Bongwarrior and I agree, therefore, we wouldn't have anything to debate (disagree) about. You should have mommy and daddy explain words to you before you make moronic comments about them. Once again...thanks for playing!

Two democrats or two republicans will always debate even though they belong to the same political party and two Iron Maiden fans will also always debate, including you and the "bong warrior". You are a fool if you believe that the "bong warrior" thinks exactly the way you do.

As I said previously, the more you talk, the more you look like an idiot. Actually, I'm now promoting you to royal idiot.

And yet you've not been able to prove even one op;nt to anybody but yourself. I never said that Bongwarrior and I agree on every single issue that we could ever possibly talk about. I merely pointed out that we agree on the issue that is at hand RIGHT NOW. Once again, you're proven nothing more than the fact that you're completely lacking in even the most basic analytical skills and you have the intelligence of a brick wall. Your fast food working parents must be so proud.

I've been seeing Maiden on every tour since 1988 and the AMoLaD tour was one of my favorites for that very reason. It took a lot of balls to do what they did and a lot of skill to do it as well as they did. Next to Brave New World, AMoLaD is Maiden's best post-reunion record. It pissed a lot of US fans off because US fans only know or care to know everything pre-No Prayer for the Dying...Most casual US fans didn't stay on board past Powerslave so...instead of shunning the Americans, Maiden caters to us by doing these throwback tours. I can dig it, but I prefer more tours like the AMoLaD tour where they're presenting their current musical mindset.
Whatever the case... Best Band in the universe. Best fans on the globe. ...and it's gonna be one of the saddest days of our lives when these guys decide to pack it in. I dread the day that news comes down. Until then, embrace them & enjoy them because it won't last forever. UP THE IRONS!

But that & Afraid To Shoot Strangers are not of that era.

If they want to include the early 90's then how about...
Holy Smoke
Run Silent, Run Deep
Wasting Love, for the Janick haters, this solo tells you why he's in the band, brilliant!
Be Quick Or Be Dead
All 4 of those are just as good as FOTD & ATSS.

Or whaddabout...
From Here to Eternity, Davey's solo on this one is a killer!
Judas Be My Guide

I absolutely agree with From Here to Eternity. I'd love to see that one live. I'm (kinda) hoping they do one of these 'period tours' from the 90s. I would, figuratively, kill to see Sign of the Cross live. The Rock in Rio version is my favorite song of all-time.

I must admit I'm gutted they're not bringing back Infinite Dreams for this tour. They've played Evil and Madness loadss of times, should have dropped one of them for it. Amazed to see Halloowed missing, must be the first time they've dropped that since 1982! Would rather see Fear left out. All niggles though, they've so many great songs to choose from...will definitely catch this when it comes to the UK.

Setlist copied and pasted directly from setlist.fm, including the little notes in ().

Anyway, disappointed in no Infinite Dreams, but Afraid to Shoot Strangers almost makes up for it, wasn't expecting that at all. No hallowed is also a shocker, Nicko once said (paraphrasing) he would never play a show again without doing that and Fear of the Dark.

...and I don't care that they've played it every show since 1982, it's still one of, if not their best songs, and never gets old live. And that opinion is fact because this is slobbermouth, gots ta fit in.

I've never been huge fan of Hallowed or Fear Of The Dark, but I totally understand why they play them. People go friggin' nuts on them.

I'm disappointed that they didn't play Infinite Dreams and Still Life, or maybe a song from Seventh Son they've not played live before. But what the hell, never expected them to play Seventh Son again. Pretty awesome!

..but you know I'm right..The BEST Maiden is '80-'88..The recent albums where the production is shoddy and they repeat the same chorus countless times are mediocre at best..Listen to Final Frontier then listen to Somewhere in Time..different band..I'm definitely more of a Priest fan and even I can say objectively that Nostradamus was kind of mediocre..

When Somewhere in Time was released it got slated in most of the English music press as Maiden's worse album ever, couldn't hold up to the first 5 albums etc, and is that keyboards ?
But then on the next album they really went for it with the keyboards (by their standards) and everyone loved it.
Just saying.

Love Maiden but highly disappointed with the set list last night. First off, was the sound not as good as it's been in the past? Anyone else feel that they were not mixed right or something? Anyway, I was hoping for something off of Piece like Where Eagles Dare or Die W Your Boots On. There was some dude in the aisle even wearing an Eddie in straightjacket and chains costume so I think I was not the only one thinking we'd get more Piece. And not hearing Hollowed was a travesty, plain and simple. Leaving that out of the list made standing in that hillbilly hellhole of a venue getting schweddy balls almost not worth it. Prisoner was the highlight for me. Songs 4-9 and 12- end could have easily been replaced by a host of other "obscure" hits.
Now that being said, as a big fan (and having travelled far and wide to see these guys perform) and transplanted yankee living here in Charlotte, I was blown away that they chose to open the tour here and am grateful for their visit. Not knowing the setlist ahead of time for once in my lifetime got me jacked up. However, the band should know what we redneck mthrfkrs want to hear, and its not Afraid to Shoot Strangers. Please. This setlist would have gone over great down in Ecuador or some other 3rd world ass pit where they go wild over every single song, but not here in the US. I think I speak for 98% of US fans that we love the music but we don't go ape shit wild unless we hear stuff like hallowed or other obscure hits, not the Run to the Hills BS that local rock radio would play once in a blue moon. I mean look at 4-9, really?? Plus, at our age just play the fkn cool shit. For example, roll out the Aces High banner and make everyone believe that's the next song, but instead break out Where Eagles dare. Same theme for the backdrop, right? Surprise us for once, God dammit!
I felt this same way about Judas Priest on the last tour, and I have to chalk it up to each band blowing its load two yrs or so ago by performing Somewhere Back in Time and British Steel. Hard to top those two shows and unless Maiden has the balls to perform Piece in its entirety, which I don't think they do, I'm not sure I'll be back. That doesn't mean I'm taking them out of rotation or burning all their CD's, but they won't be back around here for a very long time and for me the days of ponying up the big bucks travelling to see them are over if they keep this up. I mean, what's left anyway?
Piece.

First off as a card carrying member of the IMFC and as someone who spent the last 13 hours living on the FC bullentin board let me tell you how the fans feel. Both American and abroad. Believe me you don't speak for 98% of American fans, maybe 2% if that. Your one of the reasons why American fans get such a bad rap. What did you want them to play? WED? Not going to happen. Those songs are safe and work worldwide. If you've followed Maiden for as many years as you've said you have you'd realize Maiden dosen't take many chances on History tours. Album tours are a different story. I guess you bitched about the last NA tour when they played stuff from the last 10 years only. Maiden is a band that can do what they want, when they want, where they want. Is the list perfect, no none are as there is always something missing but be glad they're over here FFS!. And your sound issues statement proves to me you have no idea what your talking about. Maiden has always said it takes 5-6 shows to get all the bugs out and everything flowing smoothly. You saw show #1, of course there are going to be issues.

Maiden can play whatever the hell they want and kick ass while doing it.

I have no regrets for the setlist. Aces High for the first encore? Hell yeah.

The sound was great and Bruce was in fine form. Anybody saying the sound was not good must've had shit seats. The boys did not disappoint at all as far as I'm concerned.

THE PRISONER!

The list posted for Alice looks incorrect. He definitely played the tune "Poison" and that's not on the list posted.

Very cool set list. Lots of good classics. One of my buddies going with me has never seen them live before, or really listened to them until I gave him the entire back catalog.

I was kind of hoping for Still Life too.

I would be fine if they dropped Can I Play with Madness by the time I get to see them. If they want a pop-ish song, drop that one and put in Flight of Icarus.

Was also hoping they'd throw in Alexander the Great, but that one will probably remain in the never be played live box.

I had good seats and i thought the sound was a little off too. For a band with 3 guitars, they were not very loud in the mix. The bass was very audible but also the vocals were a little low. Awesome show though

It's amusing to me to see all these "intellectual metalheads engaging in pissing contests over everything from who's smarter, who's a bigger fan, who truely understands Maiden, and who's a "poser." It's inevitable in everyone of these posts that someone will try to get all p.h.d. on someone else. It's getting a little ridiculous.

So, SOOO dissapointed with that setlist. I was expecting more along the lines of the Maiden England video. Steve Harris is WAYY too conservative (not politically, but musically). No Infinite Dreams, Still life, etc? Still playing a lot of the same shit as well other than "Hallowed". Only about 4 songs they haven't played more recently. If they played Stranger in a Strange Land, or something of that matter, I'd be a bit more satisfied. Oh well, seeing 7th Son's title track played live is more than worth it, but I am pretty dissapointed. SORRY thats just the way it is! Priest and even Metallica (Dare I say it) alternate shit way more than Maiden with their setlists.

I was under the impression this tour was to replicate their '88 tour setwise...we still get saddled with 'Fear of the Dark'?

"Afraid To Shoot Strangers" is a curio too (seeing as it came out in '92) but that's a welcome surprise to me. Otherwise, there's plenty to love in that set. Maiden has always brought the goods live. Just wish they were playing closing to me.

In terms of veteran Metal acts....Priest has been great at pulling out a significant number of different, rare gems over their last four American tours. Maiden has switched out several songs too. We can split hairs over what we want to hear (I'm guilty too, clearly) but these bands deserve credit for not just doing a paint by numbers set in their twilight years, like so many other acts.

I'm glad they didn't just play the Maiden England setlist exactly as it was done back then. I'm glad they finally dropped Hallowed Be Thy Name, finally, for fucks sake play something else for a change and they finally did. Of course a few whining babies complain that they didn't play Hallowed, oh no was it your first Maiden concert and you didn't get to hear that song?

It's so funny how every Maiden tour brings out non-stop bitching and moaning about the setlist. If they played every song from every album across a three day stint at one venue, someone would still bitch and complain (probably when they hit Virtual XI, and they would have a point).

This is going to be an awesome show regardless of the setlist. They nailed Seventh Son in the clip...not an easy song to play, especially with opening night rust.

I could do without 2M2M, The Trooper and Run to the Hills, but fuck it...as soon as they start playing them, I'll be singing every word and headbanging like I always do.

It's easy to criticize a setlist from afar, but when you're feeling the excitement of a live gig, it's a different story.

I'm amazed to see Aces High in the encore...I never thought it would be played in any position other than the opener.

#1 RiotAct666,
You are wrong Maiden England has not been given an Official Release on DVD.
In case you hadn't noticed the band have been following a trend, they release old Home Videos & do a Tour based on that release.
If I'm mistaken, then please show me where I can obtain a copy, cuz everything else on DVD including Visions of The Beast is still in print & available at my local Best-buy, doesn't add up that the one the fans seem to regard as the best setlist wouldn't be available.

#2,
The setlist was cut & pasted from http://www.setlist.fm/,
Hence why the web address was in the comment field, thank you for stating what is obvious to anyone with a 2nd grade reading level.

Setlist is 'okay', a lot of repeats as usual.

'Afraid to Shoot Strangers', surprised by that, but its a waste because the song sucks.

The only song on the setlist that really impresses me is '7th Son', but we knew they were going to play that one.

A very 'safe' setlist; where is 'Killers', 'Still Life', 'The Prophecy', 'Infinite Dreams'... and for the love of God when the fuck are they going to play 'Alexander the Great'.

I mean, most of this setlist has already been played since 2008.

Maiden are always great live, but I would rather they do full albums shows then these 'time period' tours where the basically play the same damn songs they play every tour!!!

Alice didn't play "Elected" by the way. I too have long been awaiting "Maiden England" on DVD; will be happy to see it come with the next installment of the Maiden story. Thought the show was great with a few first-night kinks involved, but it's Maiden & the atmosphere was electric. Great turnout though Bruce is wrong that this was the 1st time they're in Charlotte since '88. I was on the front row for the Fear OF The Dark tour in July '92 at the same venue. Can't please everyone on the set list, but Phantom of the Opera & The Prisoner in particular made my night. SSOASS was good, but needed more visuals or something going on. The middle portion is too long live with them just standing there trying to recreate the vibe of "...The Ancient Mariner." Personally would've loved to have heard them break out "Tailgunner" from NPFTDYING.

now that would be a freakin awesome set list!!!

While it may not be the exact 30th anniversary date for Number Of The Beast, it is the 30th Anniversary year for the Metal Masterpiece. I am glad they put "Total Eclipse" on the reissued versions of the album. That song is killer!

"Children Of The Damned," "Hallowed Be Thy Name," "Gangland," and the insane bass lines on "Invaders" are my favorites. "Run To The Hills" is not a bad song, just overplayed. I am more burnt on the title track.

Powerslave, and the first Maiden are my favs. Killers is awesome too. Maiden is a classic band!!!

Once again, Happy 30th Anniversary to Number Of The Beast. Next year Piece Of Mind will be 30. Can't wait to celebrate the 30th for Powerslave!!

I see alot of ppl in agreement about the setlist. You're a tool with your rebuttal post to my long winded comment, but I see alot of guys agree that they could have made a better song selection. Playing it "safe" doesn't appeal to us hardcore fans who made them what they are here in the US with Number, Piece and Powerslave, so to say we have a bad rap because we complain is stupid. Only you and Bruce D. feel the US crowd has a bad rap and I personally don't give a shit. Not going to scream until hoarse for "Afraid.." like I would for "...Eagles Dare". Not going to happen. So instead of spending 13 hrs on the BB chatting about how cool it was when you saw them in '88, try being a real fan and do what I did...walk around town scanning the pubs and golf courses so I could personally shake their hands and say "thanks" for the great music.

The only song everyone wants, I have been waiting for along with everyone else and expected on this tour especially is "Infinite Dreams" Oh well, I guess I have to deny them. So here we go everbody sing together:

Infinite dreams I can't deny them
Infinity is hard to comprehend
I couldn't hear those screams
Even in my wildest dreams

Suffocation waking in a sweat
Scared to fall asleep again
Incase the dream begins again
Someone chasing and cannot move
Standing rigid a nightmare's statue
What a dream, when will it end
And will I transcend?

Restless sleep, the mind's in turmoil
One nightmare ends, another fertile
It's getting to me so scared to sleep
But scared to wake now, in too deep

Even though it reached new heights
I rather like the restless nights
It makes me wonder, it makes me think
There's more to this, I'm on the brink
It's not the fear of what's beyond
It's just that I might not respond
I have an interest almost craving
Would I like to get too far in?

It can't be all coincidence
Too many things are evident
You tell me "You're an unbeliever"
Spiritualist? Well me, I'm neither
But wouldn't you like to know
The truth
Of what's out there to have the proof
And find out just which side
You're on
Where would you end in Heaven or
In Hell?

Help me! Help me to find my true
Self without seeing the future
Save me, save me from torturing
Myself even within my dreams

There's got to be just more to it
Than this
Or tell me why do we exist
I'd like to think that when I die
I'd get a chance another time
And to return and live again
Reincarnate, play the game
Again and again and again and again
