SLAYER's KERRY KING Says Two New Songs Are Fully Recorded - June 13, 2012
MTV's "Alternative Nation" conducted an interview with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King when the band performed in Romania on June 4 in front of more than 3,000 people at Arenele Romane in Bucharest. You can now watch the chat below.

When asked about SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman's current state of health (Jeff in January 2011 contracted necrotizing fasciitis, likely caused by a spider bite, and has been undergoing surgeries, skin grafts and intense rehab since), King said, "Jeff is… If you look at him, he looks fine. But playing the intricate things that we do, he's not ready to do that. He doesn't know if he has the stamina for an hour-and-fifteen-minute set. He can play any of the slower stuff and do it just like the record. But we made a name for ourselves, historically, for being good live, so we had to make the decision and say, 'You've gotta get better before you try to come back. If you come back, make it a special thing, not just an adequate thing.'"

King also spoke about SLAYER's rumored plans to release a two-song EP this summer, possibly to coincide with the band's appearance at the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. "[The two new SLAYER tracks] are done, but they're just not mixed," he said. "It's [like], do you put them out now or do you just wait for the [full-length] record to be done [and include them as part of the final package]? We're gona finish the record September-October. So I, myself, would rather wait, because I don't like to put those two songs out and then include them on the record. In my thinking, if you put those two songs out, then make ten more songs and put those two on that album just as an afterthought. But I feel like I've gotta give people ten new songs. That's why on the last one [2009's 'World Painted Blood'] we did 11, 'cause 'Psychopathy Red' was already out. So [the two new songs are] done. We'll see what the record company proposes. I think they've been talking about an EP, which is kind of a throwback to the '80s, which is really cool, I think. But we'll just have to see."

A SLAYER Bucharest concert photo gallery can be found at Metalhead.ro.

SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo previously stated about the band's new material, "[It sounds like] SLAYER. . . Traditional fans will be pacified and non-traditional fans will be like, 'Again?'"

Speaking to U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine, Kerry described the new SLAYER songs as "really refreshing and energetic." He added, "One thing I can tell you is that the songs are shaping up in the classic SLAYER style. You won't be hearing us doing acoustic stuff. [laughs]"

EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt is filling in for Hanneman on SLAYER's summer tour, which kicked off last month at All Tomorrow's Parties in England.

SLAYER's latest album, "World Painted Blood", sold 41,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 12 on The Billboard 200 chart.

In the interview when asked about Jeff, KERRY KING kind of makes it sound like that Jeff may not return. I can see the confusion starting now.

Slayer is now the Toby Keith of metal.

When's the Slayer cheese being released? That's an appropriate product tie-in.

Much of Slayer's sound is credited to Rick Rubin. Unfortunately Rubin creates a template as to how the artist should sound and to not deviate from it. Look at his work with Slayer, System of a Down and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Many of those records sound the same. Rubin's work with other artists is similiar in nature but molded to the artist. Rick was the first person in a long-time to tell James how Metallica should sound. I would like to point something out - RHCP are not the same without John Frusciante. That guy has God given talent for the music. I would liken him to Jeff Hanneman in that naturally ability. A Slayer record without Jeff would become sterile but still be Slayer. Unfortunately Kerry gets thin on song ideas and lyrics after awhile. Dave and Tom can't save this. I realize Jeff might not be able to play but NO ONE has suggested that Gary should or will be taking Jeff's place in Slayer. Gary is awesome live but we all miss Jeff and his shin pads. I pray for a healthy Jeff.

sounds like jeff is probably gone. before the injury he had been less and less involved in everything the band was doing, so i'm gonna go on a hunch that he just doesn't have the same drive for doing this thing anymore especially after the injury.

Jeff is very lucky to be alive number 1.

Number 2 - It is too early to comment on his return. Just bunch of noise right now...

The new record will be on Kerry's shoulders. Lets see how he handles it.

Seems like they wont address the elephant in the room...

is it
A) all Kerry on the new tunes so far,
B) Gary & Kerry (The Ambigously...uh, nevermind...)
C) Jeff was in the studio but just can't play live yet?

My money's on 'A', but I'd like to hear it from them...

very few people buy whole albums anymore. when an album sells 9300 copies (new fear factory) and its in the top 40, that pretty much tells you this. realese songs 1 or 2 at a time on your website for a buck each; to hell with itunes etc. thats what i'd do ...

I'd rather Slayer wait to record with their Brother instead of outsiders but can't stop business. Ask Bill Ward. I don't mind the touring without Jeff to a certain extent. The shows I've seen slayed.

Um you did what you did before and release the 2 song cd at hot topic. It sold out the day of and I had to get mine off amazon of ebay or some shit for a higher price. Just make sure you make more to fill the demand.

Get well soon Jeff! I would hate to see you trolling with Mike Portnoy.

EP's are fantastic. A nice, short blast of tunes to get you amped for something more substantial. Besides, most people's albums are way too fucking long to begin with. Just because you can fit 80 minutes on a shitty sounding CD doesn't mean you need to fill the damn thing. You probably don't have 80 minutes worth of good ideas anyway. If it won't fit on a single LP, it's 90% likely that you're just a very poor editor.

SLAYER Frontman: JEFF HANNEMAN Will Return To The Road 'When He's 100 Percent' - July 5, 2011

http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=160323

"There's no way we'd go into a studio without him," Araya said.

"As a band we're not going to do something without him. He's an integral part of the band. We require his musical skills, his writing skills. He's an integral part of the band. So we're going to hold off until he's at 100 percent and can join that process and be part of it."

SLAYER Guitarist Says Songs For Next Album Are Sounding 'Really Refreshing And Energetic' - Feb. 4, 2012

http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=169254

"Currently, we're taking a break, but I am very excited by the way it's all turning out so far," King said. "I've worked up three songs with Dave [Lombardo, drums], and they're sounding really refreshing and energetic. I'm certain that I'll have three more ready to go when we return to action. And then there's the stuff that Jeff [Hanneman, guitar] will also bring to the table."

...

So Jeff should be part of it. He's just not capable of touring yet.

Jeff is lucky to still have an arm and to even be alive. After all the surgeries, physical therapy I'm sure he wants/needs to relax and heal. I wouldn't be surprised if he takes off for the next 2 years. I'm sure the new album will have 2-3 great songs. That is all Kerry is good for.

Where are you people getting this idea that Jeff is gone for good?

He wouldn't have made the effort to appear at the Indio Big Four show last year if he was truly done.

He might not have the enthusiastic personality that Kerry does...he's actually been invisible from an interview point of view over the last 10 years, but you can tell he loves playing live and writing music. He'll be back...dude almost lost his arm...hell, dude almost DIED. Give him a chance to heal up.

Diabolus in Musica is 99% Hanneman. It's also *really* good. People here get all pissy because it has different rhythms and tempos on it. I even heard someone say Love to Hate was a rap track and Death's Head was like Nine Inch Nails because of some pitchshifted vocals. Really? I don't fucking think so.
