DEZ FAFARA Says COAL CHAMBER Is 'Not Even Discussing' Any Other Tours After SOUNDWAVE - Oct. 17, 2011
Alternative Music Hub recently conducted an interview with Dez Fafara (DEVILDRIVER, COAL CHAMBER) about COAL CHAMBER's upcoming reunion tour as part of Australia's Soundwave Festival. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

Alternative Music Hub: How excited are you to play as COAL CHAMBER again?

Dez: Very excited; it has been a slow progression. Meegs [Miguel Rascón, guitar] and Mikey [Mike Cox, drums] started to come around in '05. They came around to a sold-out DEVILDRIVER show in California and Meegs pulled my wife aside and apologized to her about everything that went that caused my family to move into a one-bedroom apartment and start all over again. I thought that was rather big-hearted of him and they were off hard drugs for 2-3 years then. Cut to '09, Meegs came up to DEVILDRIVER to play [COAL CHAMBER's] "Loco" with us on stage in Pasadena. At the end of it, he came up and gave me a hug and said, "I want to do this in the future." Now in 2011 we are talking about doing shows. They have been off the hard drugs for some time so they can play at 100 percent capacity. We want to bring back the Ten Ton Gorilla back on the stage.

Alternative Music Hub: That is good to hear as the drugs were an issue that caused the breakup.

Dez: When I left COAL CHAMBER, I told the press I was leaving because I wanted to go a different musical direction. But what I did was take the high road and not say in front of their wives, parents and families, all of whom I have known for years, that, "Hey, they are so strung out on drugs they are going to be dead." I just took the high road and said I was leaving. That was good because I never went against them in the press. It allowed them to get clean and allowed us to be friends. I realized that every night I was on stage with a microphone in my hand, I was putting money in their pockets which led to putting drugs into their hands. Once we stopped going on stage as COAL CHAMBER, their money ran out, their fame ran out and they eventually had to get clean. Now that they are alive, what more do you need to say apart from, my friends are alive and want to play music.

Alternative Music Hub: What is the situation with [former COAL CHAMBER bassists] Nadja [Peulen] or Rayna [Foss]?

Dez: Well, Rayna was far gone, way in the beginning. She has some stuff she is dealing with internally, which I don't think will bring her back to music. Nadja, we had talks with her. We needed the enthusiasm as well as… We didn't want any demands; because we had no demands. It was the best interest of the original members was to go find someone with the same interest as we did and enthusiasm. That is where Chela [Rhea Harper] had come from. She's [a] real-deal player. She grew up with the music of COAL CHAMBER, brings that enthusiasm and she is an amazing-looking girl so she will have a great stage presence.

Alternative Music Hub: I know it has been said that COAL CHAMBER are only playing Soundwave but if it all goes well, could we see other tours around the world?

Dez: Since we announced we are doing Soundwave, we have offers to do tours and we are not even discussing it. We have been offered three or four record deals. We want to come down and have a fun time and full of happiness. Once we get home from it, then we may discuss it. Keep in mind three days after we get home from Soundwave, I go on tour of America with DEVILDRIVER. So with DEVILDRIVER being booked, it will be hard to have both.

Everything I've read about her points in the direction of some sort of mental illness. I know Morgan Rose divorced her a few years ago and got custody of his kids, which doesn't usually happen unless the mother has serious issues. It's kinda sad, really.

So you blather on about "taking the high road" and not disclosing substance abuse issues back then only to wet the bed later and divulge everything in a disposable, tell-all interview? Retarded.

Oh, and having to "move into a one-bedroom apartment?" Waaaah. Boo-hoo. Six million Americans lost their homes last year, you poser.

Good to see Coal Chamber playing back playing some shows together. Can't wait to check out the footage once it happens. I really hope they end up doing a North American tour at some point.

I'm excited to see The Chamber back, too bad Rayna isn't coming back to music. That new girl is hot though.

hated each other for a long time, and it had nothing to do with substance abuse either. Maybe they never settled their differences? Shame, because Rayna looked right in Coal Chamber. Nadja was 'prettier' but Rayna had that short and ackward thing going on that suited their image perfectly. She is also a really nice girl, or at least was when i met her in the late 90's during the height of C.C's fame. Nadja just looked like some goth chick for hire.

I've also heard that another reason Coal Chamber broke up is because they owed a shitload of money to Roadrunner after the failure of Chamber Music. I'm not sure how true this is, but money does cause internal pressure, no doubt.

Putting a half-decent metal band on hold to pave the way for a resurrection of a shitty 90s goff nu-metal band with poo-poo chugga chugga songs and juggalo outfits? What a great idea!

If Dez is right in saying they have not been giving a full-fledged reunion serious consideration, I hope that does not change. DevilDriver is a pretty good band that has now picked up a good amount of steam. Would be a shame to see it put on the backburner for CC's sake.

i'm sure this C.C reunion is just for nostalgia's sake. I seriously doubt they would consider reforming for good. The audience has moved on and just want to hear the 'classics' from their youth again.

The so called 'nu-metal' revival that people were mentioning last year never really came about. Korn '3' wasn't all that successful, and the Limp Bizkit comeback album flopped. So there isn't really much demand for new music from these kind of artists anymore.

I demand it dammit! I'm sure there's hundreds of thousands of others who'd rather see a nu metal revival than this cookie monster metal shit of these days...sorry I guess I never grew up...what the fuck ever

Dude, you forgot about Diamond Eyes. Okay, it's not exactly nu metal (save for CMND/CTRL), but still. That album was the band's most successful since White Pony (although the self-titled sold more units).

One of those bands who got me in to loud music, alongside Korn, Limp Bizkit, Machine Head and all late 90´s so called nu/metal. Good to see them back just for a fun reunion. Wish them a lot of fun Down Under.

He was patting himself on the back for keeping his mouth shut...then he opens his mouth. Them supposedly being clean is beside the point. Also...him taking credit for their sobriety is BULLSHIT. Quitting the band to "take money OUT of their hands"??? I'm sure him quitting didn't stop their drug taking. I'm a Devidriver fan and to some degree...a Coal Chamber fan. But his whole speech just REEKS of bullshit.

Do a show or two & see if anyone regresses due to the live on the road vibe (thinking Jani Lane circa '08). Dez did put the Headstones track on the best of CC disc, that song was a slam on the 3 others. Anyway, I was hoping Rayna would come back though & there'd be a US tour. I dig both bands, but would not be good to dump DD for CC, as several of us agree.

For me, Coal Chamber became known as the band you had to sit through to get to the band you went to see. They opened up on sooo many tours, and they were never enjoyable. Ugh.

Dez has a good thing going with Devildriver. Hope this doesn't fuck it up.

Allowing your friends to waste away and probably die is "taking the high road?" If he'd really cared, he absolutely would have intervened, especially if he thought their habits were going to kill them.

Which is probably nothing more a happy ending for CC. I always liked CC, and I hated that they imploded like they did, before they had a chance to develop and grow into something better. So best of luck to Dez, Meegs, and Mike down in Australia, and here's hoping that Rayna is able to recover from whatever has laid her low for so long, be it drugs, illness, or anything else.

I am in the minority here...I'd much rather see Coal Chamber continue on than Devildriver. Coal chamber had listenable nu metal songs. Devildriver sounds like shit for the most part. I dig a few songs but it's not his style...he was made for nu metal. His voice fits Coal Chamber perfectly...only those too young to remember Coal Chamber and the impact they had on the genre along with Korn or those who are too cool for nu metal in their minds are gonna say otherwise...sorry my balls dropped and grew hair and I still feel the same...too bad my peers do not...

I saw them with Slipknot opening up for them and it was sad as hell. Slipknot destroyed the place to a packed crowd, all moshpit, and then most of the crowd left before Coal Chamber played. I felt bad for them, it had to suck to see that happen.
Also, Rayna, Nadja, or new chick, I'd pee in all of their butts.
Especially Rayna, crazy in the head, crazy in the bed!!!!!
