KATATONIA: 'Last Fair Deal', 'Night Is The New Day' Special Editions Due In April - Mar. 23, 2011
Sweden's KATATONIA will release special editions of the critically acclaimed albums "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" and "Night Is The New Day" on April 25 to coincide with a series of shows to mark the band's 20th anniversary. The 10th-anniversary edition "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" will be presented in deluxe mediabook packaging, as a two-disc edition containing tracks from the now hard-to-find singles "Teargas" and "Tonight's Music". The reissue of 2009's "Night Is The New Day" will include bonus tracks from the "The Longest Year" EP. Both titles will be presented with newly updated cover artwork courtesy of original artist Travis Smith.

Performances for the 20th-anniversary "Last Fair Day Gone Night Tour 2011" are scheduled for Luxembourg, Germany, Holland, France, England, and Greece, and the band will perform two sets at each show. The first set will see the band play "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" front to back. The second set will consist of a mixed set of carefully picked songs from the band's extensive catalogue.

KATATONIA is offering exclusive VIP ticket packages, limited to only 70 for each concert, which will include a laminated VIP pass exclusive to the show, access to soundcheck, a meet-and-greet with KATATONIA, a t-shirt exclusive to that particular show, a special tour program, and a very special limited-edition vinyl version of "Night Is The New Day", among other exclusive items. All the goods will be included in a specially made KATATONIA messenger bag. The VIP laminate will also allow early access to venues, so that VIPs can get the best seats in the house. In addition, all VIPs will automatically be entered into a draw for a grand prize made available by a selection of the band's equipment endorsers.

The dates are as follows:

May 04 - Kulturfabrik - Luxembourg **
May 05 - Stollwerck - Cologne, Germany**
May 06 - Koko - London, UK (Live DVD recording)**
May 07 - De Kade - Zaandam, Holland**
May 08 - Alhambra - Paris, France**
May 14 - Fuzz Live Music Club - Athens, Greece

** Exclusive VIP packages available for these shows.

Wasn't NitND "SPECIAL" enough when it came out a little over a year ago? Gimme a break. Anders, please write some damn songs for the next album, okay?

I suppose it's too much to ask for Katatonia to celebrate some of their 20th anniversary in the U.S...? I would LOVE to hear LFDGD in its entirety!

This is all PEACEVILLE's doing. They keep rehashing the same old catalog of albums over and over. Back in 2002 they released all these digipack "remasters" of all their classic catalog releases. None of them sounded remastered at all to me and they contain and couple bonus tracks here and there. They are a label known for re-issue after re-issue. Not a shock to see them try and cash in here.

Would like to have Night is the New Day in 5.1 like they did with Cold Distance. I would definitely buy it if they gave it that treatment.

how many special editions of NITND are they going to make? I did get to see them with Swallow the Sun and Orphaned Land this year, they played at a whole in the wall in my town, and they kicked ass.

This is ridiculous; I hate when labels milk it with these "special reissues" and nonsense.

"Last Fair Deal Gone Down" the second edition in full-length's in Katatonia's alternative metal/depressive rock career is in my top three releases disregarding genre. It is well loved among fans who don't flock from Opeth's fanbase and herald "Brave Murder Day" as "the greatest (and possibly only) release Katatonia has ever done" simply because of Mikael Åkerfeldt being involved in session recording with Katatonia for vocals on that record (no disrespect to Opeth). I own the original 2001 pressing and the 2004 Peaceville Digipack Re-master. Both are excellent in their own ways. The re-mastered sound might be a little more on the subtle end, but it's definitely there. In addition that, there are three extra tracks - two of which are golden and one which is rather dismissible, but not a bad effort or harmful to the overall atmosphere of the album.

The EP's Teargas and Tonight's Music which will be included in the packaging with LFDGD (which I'm assuming will be the Peaceville Digipack Re-master) are decent, but Katatonia has released much better EP's (see Sound of Decay, Jhva Elohim Meth... the Revival). Therefore, this does not give much reason to merit purchasing this re-release.

Furthermore, the artwork new artwork is a bit stale and insulting to such a great album.

"Night is the New Day" was an excellent release and a step up from "The Great Cold Distance" despite the lack of "heavier songs" you might have been under the impression they were ready to pull out more of from "TGCD". At first the album didn't really stick, but after a third listen I loved it and hoped if this is what Katatonia sounds like when they are in a depressed mood that this would be one mood they don't overcome (and talk about the pinnacle of closers that "Departer").

Unlike "LFDGD", "NitND" will be releasing with one of their most excellent EP's "The Longest Year". This EP's track-list is remarkable. It's remarkable because of three main reasons: Sold Heart, Idle Blood (Linje 14), The Longest Year (Video). Idle Blood (Linje 14) is something you wouldn't expect to hear from Katatonia in a million years and The Longest Year is their greatest video - ever.

The artwork for "Night is the New Day" is brilliant as it stands currently. There is no need to re-image such beautiful cover, especially when it's a downgrade - just to be sold as "new and improved".

You probably think by now that I worship all that is Katatonia. But, alas, time to discuss their live performance. I have not ever had a chance to hear Katatonia in person being from the Midwest without making travel accommodations, which I cannot justify for anything less than a "fest" with several bands that I like. From what I've heard of Katatonia via YouTube pro-cordings and ****-cordings. Katatonia doesn't have that captivating sound when playing live. They are by no means a bad live band, but they don't offer that sense of estacy you get from listening to them in their studio recordings. The idea to have them play "LFDGD" is something that I'd be interested in seeing regardless of anything. Which sadly, I think is the most positive thing to come out of all of this.

- Dan
