STRYPER: 'The Covering' Album Pushed Back To Early 2011 - Oct. 24, 2010
The release date for "The Covering", the much-anticipated covers album from Christian hard rockers STRYPER, has been pushed back to early 2011 from the previously announced October 13. The band states, "Originally, the album was projected to be released [via Big3 Records] in the fourth quarter of 2010. However, the business and label team feel that more set-up time will allow for a stronger release of this amazing recording."

"The Covering", produced by frontman Michael Sweet, will be unlike any previous STRYPER recording in that it's a collection of cover songs from bands that inspired them and helped to shape their sound and musical identity, including hits from JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MAIDEN, LED ZEPPELIN, KANSAS and many others. A cover of BLACK SABBATH's classic track "Heaven and Hell" will be the first single, with an expected iTunes release in advance of the album. "The Covering" will also include "God", a new original recording from STRYPER.

"STRYPER recorded 'The Yellow and Black Attack' (Enigma Records) back in 1983, and it was released the following year," says Sweet. "Twenty six years have passed and after seven studio releases and multiple compilation and live projects, we decided to show our fans where our roots lie musically.

"'The Covering' consists of particular songs and groups that molded and shaped us and made us who we are today."

One of the highlights for STRYPER fans is that "The Covering" is the first studio album in nearly two decades on which all four original members, plus longtime keyboardist Charles Foley, have recorded together.

"This record includes the original lineup," explains Michael.

"Tim [Gaines, bass], Robert [Sweet, drums], Oz [Fox, guitar] and I haven't recorded a full-length project together since 1990's 'Against the Law' (Enigma Records), so this is truly history in the making. We also had what was probably the best time we've ever had recording a record together and I believe that this comes through in the energy and the spirit of each track.

"We're all extremely excited about this record and more importantly, we're all extremely confident about the future of STRYPER and the four of us making music together for years to come."

"The Covering" track listing:

01. SWEET - "Set Me Free"

becuase of the Christian thing alot of people pan these guys saying they suck, but in all honesty I saw them on the REBORN tour a few years back in Detroit and it was great. M Sweet has one of the best voices in music. If you take a listen to what these guys represent you'll see they are trying to get people past the shady TV preachers begging for money, and the oher church non-sense and get people to see that God and Christ, and having a relationship with them is all that matters. As far as this covers album I hope that this helps put them back on the map. The last two stryper cd's Reborn and Murder By Pride have been pretty strong. Rob Halford even gave this recording props, so if the Metal god likes it, it has to be good!!!!

Stryper's place in metal history is secure. cemented. they practically created an entire subgenre. nothing these Lemmy loving, death metal gobblers can say derogatory that can derail that, no matter how hard they wish it could. now let me say these covers aren't the best. some just sound out of place, but again, whatever Michael Sweet and Co. do will not change their revered place.

excelsior!

They are talented musicians....what is the point of recording songs that have been heard so many times unless your version is going to be something different? This is what karoake is all about! If they were serious they should've made a new record.

Wow, I was expecting a slew of Christian bashing hate-mongers in here. Sometimes Blabbermouth actually surprises me.

The playing is very stiff all throughout. The main riff to "Over the Mountain" is played in triplets as opposed to the straight 16th notes, because it's easier that way. The lower harmony to "The Trooper" is overly palm muted. The production is awful; all the instruments are fighting for the same frequencies and nothing breathes.

Mike Sweet can hit the notes, but the timbre of his voice sucks. He would work best as a Michael Anthony-esque backing vocalist, hitting the high melodies. Rob Sweet has no concept of dynamics; the drums are hit the same way, with the same intensity, no matter the volume of the piece of music. The bass player is the only musician of any merit, and he's buried in the mix.

Hate this band's style. Everything about them seems contrived, and they're stuck in a vortex of cheesy rock nostalgia. No heart.

Michael Sweet has an amazing voice, flat out. And the whole Bumblebees for Christ worked for a couple of years--I can remember attending four weddings in a year's time and EVERY ONE of them played Stryper's "Honestly" for the first dance.

It is a little odd that a christian group is recording a tune by Black Sabbath, don't you think?

the sample that I listened to of their take on "The Trooper" alone confirms I will purchase this album when it is available.
