IRON MAIDEN: New Album Details Revealed - June 7, 2010
The European release date for IRON MAIDEN's much-anticipated new studio album, "The Final Frontier", is now confirmed for Monday, August 16. The CD features artwork (see below) illustrated by Melvyn Grant and, to mark the occasion, the band has made special arrangements for one new album track, "El Dorado", to be made available worldwide as a FREE digital download MP3 with immediate effect via www.ironmaiden.com. The song can also be streamed in the YouTube clip below.

Singer Bruce Dickinson explains, "'El Dorado' is a preview of the forthcoming studio album. As we will be including it in the set of our 'Final Frontier World Tour' (which opens in Dallas on June 9) we thought it would be great to thank all our fans and get them into 'The Final Frontier' mood by giving them this song up front of the tour and album release."

The band reunited with long-time MAIDEN producer Kevin "Caveman" Shirley in early 2010 at Compass Point Studios, Nassau to record the album and then moved to The Cave Studios in Malibu, California to finish the recording and do the mixing. Compass Point Studio is very familiar to the band, it was where they recorded the "Piece Of Mind" (1983), "Powerslave" (1984) and "Somewhere In Time" (1986) albums.

Bruce comments: "The studio had the same vibe and it was EXACTLY as it had been in 1983, NOTHING had changed! Even down to the broken shutter in the corner... same carpet... everything... It was really quite spooky. But we felt very relaxed in such a familiar and well-trodden environment and I think this shows in the playing and the atmosphere of the album."

30 years on from their eponymous debut album in April 1980, "The Final Frontier" will be MAIDEN's 15th studio album, making a remarkable average of a new album every two years for 30 years and totaling over 80 million album sales during this period.

"The Final Frontier" track listing (total running time 76:35):

01. Satellite 15....The Final Frontier (8:40)
02. El Dorado (6:49)
03. Mother Of Mercy (5:20)
04. Coming Home (5:52)
05. The Alchemist (4:29)
06. Isle Of Avalon (9:06)
07. Starblind (7:48)
08. The Talisman (9:03)
09. The Man Who Would Be King (8:28)
10. When The Wild Wind Blows (10:59)

"The Final Frontier World Tour" begins in Dallas on June 9 with 25 shows in major cities across the USA and Canada, playing to an expected 350,000 fans or more. Following this the tour will ship over to Europe starting in Dublin on July 30 and playing a few selected major festivals and stadiums , finishing in Valencia, Spain, on August 21 and including a concert in Transylvania.

Says bass player and founder member Steve Harris: "We're hugely excited about this tour. I think the fans will really like the brand new stage production and lights and we will also be debuting one of the new album tracks , 'El Dorado'. Our Texan fans will be the very first people anywhere to hear it live, so it will be interesting to see their reaction and how it goes down with the crowd on the night! Eddie has changed a bit for this tour but is possibly the most outrageous one to date... I can't say too much about him as don't want to spoil the surprise but I guarantee he will scare the hell out of you!"

lol Benjamin Breeg rips from "Man of the World" by Fleetwood Mac and now fomr 0:28 it sounds like "Barracuda" by Heart (not that it's a bad thing tbh)

Cool song though, although I think Bruce's vocals sound pretty flat... maybe that'll get fixed for the final mix, i dunno... but they seem to be a few db too quiet and far back in the mix.

Really like the 'Predator' style cover art too... they might as well have given Eddie dreads lol

Okay, the Eddie looks like a mixture of the standard Maiden mascot, Alien, the Rancor from Return Of The Jedi and Kermit the frog. This reminds me also of a Perry Rhodan artwork.

It is not my cup of tea, somehow. A bit too colourful (lettering of the album title could have also been in red) and quite juvenile. I liked the introspective and more mature artwork of AMOLAD better. But this new one's quite original, I give them that.

So, Iron Maiden will please us with 10 new songs, like on No Prayer For The Dying - I expect this new one to be better, though. No songwriting credits and song lenghts yet, so not too much info for further speculation.

Some song titles sound a bit awkward, but we're talking about Maiden here after all.

El Dorado is hopefully NOT another four minutes midtempo rocker à la Wicker Man, Wildest Dreams, Different World. That recipe got stale with Dance Of Death.

And: The Alchemist?

"And all this vegetable world appeared on my left foot
As a bright sandal, formed immortal of precious stones and gold"

"I stooped down, and bound it on
To walk forward through eternity..."

??

Nitpicking aside, this is of course my most anticipated album of 2010. I hope Iron Maiden continue where they left off with Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son and where Bruce left off with Chemical Wedding.

Bring it on!

And up the irons (or the shiny futuristic can opener from space)!

To the above commenters about the vocals sounding a bit off: I tend to agree. When I switched over to my studio headphones, they sounded better but does support the idea that there's something wrong with the mix that it doesn't sound quite right on any pair of speakers.

I didn't like like the snare sound either but that's totally a judgement call.

I was so fixated on the artwork that I didn't see the song lenghts already posted there! How stupid is that?

Okay, a mixed bag of shorter songs and "epics", with the longer tunes being dominant. I like the fact that they open with the title track. But I don't expect another Caught Somewhere In Time. More time changes and no constant uptempo I guess.

I think El Dorado will be the standard rocker as an introduction to the new album on the forthcoming tour.

All in all the song lenghts and overall structure remind me of Brave New World.

Interesting!

I will need a bit of time to stomach El Dorado, not very catchy.

But at this point I agree with the comments concerning Bruce's vocals.

And once again, an Iron Maiden album with a less than stellar sounding snare drum. Nicko, damn you! AMOLAD was the first album since Fear Of The Dark with a strong snare sound. Not so much this time. Disappointing, since for me, the snare is a very integral part in the soundscape of a metal song.

The guitars sound quite good though.

El Dorado doesn't blow my mind, but at least it's better than the openers on the last three Maiden albums (not as good as the openers on the last three Bruce solo albums though).

Obviously I'm quite ungrateful here and in a bitchy mood - I need sleep I guess.

Okay, final words: NEW MAIDEN ALBUM, FUCK YES!

Good night.

You sir, are a dumbass. I didn't say Maiden is "bored", I said they were "boring" because you don't hear about them for the wrong reasons. Let me quote myself:

Not their music, that kicks major ass. But you never hear about them unless it's a new album/tour/DVD. Oh wait! That's a good thing!

End quote.

Let me walk you through this since you couldn't be bothered to apply "reading comprehension"

"Their music kicks major ass"

"It's a GOOD thing that we hear about them for tours/CDs/DVDs" Those are the things we all want from a band. Not drug arrests, etc.

I can't believe you: A. Didn't get the joke. and B. Are such a mulleted idiot that you fell for such a cheap literary device. and C. Think you know more about metal than anyone else and D. Would call me a fake fan.

You wear your ass as a hat, don't you?

I scoff in your general direction.

Don't blame Nicko for the snare sound, it's the production's fault but still keep in mind that you are listening to an mp3, which is nowhere near the album sound quality.
As for El Dorado, it kinda reminds me of a "These Colours Don't Run" type of song. It definitely needs some time to grow on you. I really dig it now that I've listened to it 3 or 4 times.
Oh and btw, I suspect that it's going to be one of the weaker songs on the album, which hopefully means that the album will be fucking awesome.

I think it's weird that people are complaining about the epic metal songs from Iron Maiden. Where have you been?

Rime Of The Ancient Mariner (13:37)
Phantom Of The Opera (7:20)
Alexander The Great (8:36)
Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son (9:53)

This is not just an established trend but also something this band does extremely well. And you want them to stop doing this why?

In fact, I think some of the songs could be longer. I'm waiting for a twenty minute monster epic about the Trojan War.

Nope, I remember a Fear Of The Dark era interview with Steve where he stated that Nicko prefers a jazz-y snare sound. And that they had to talk Nicko into tuning his snare down. The effect was the biggest snare sound since the departure of Clive Burr - which I really enjoyed.

So, the usually flat sounding snare is Nicko's preference, which I learned to accept - but never enjoyed.

Alright, good night.

1. I think the snare sounds okay...

AMOLAD had a REALLY strong snare sound, while the drums on Dance of Death sounded like cardboard boxes. The sound on this song is somewhere in between the two.

2. The vocals do sound a little flat...I think some double-tracking would have helped a lot...and let's face it: Bruce can't hit Aces High-style notes anymore. He would be smart to stop trying to stop the aging process and sing in a more "sweet spot" for a 50 year old.

Not to mention that Kevin Shirley doesn't do much on the production...it's basically the Steve Harris Show, and the man is half-deaf.

3. I like the song musically...the bass intro is badass, even if it sounds like Heart's Barracuda, great tone from 'Arry...cool galloping riff, solid solos.

Between the album cover and the song, I'm not blown away, and I'm a HUGE Maiden fan. I'm still excited just to be able to see and hear them at this point, though.

I'm not expecting another Number of the Beast or Powerslave.

You can't honestly compare those brilliant songs to the "epic" style that they've been doing over and over ever since The X-Factor.

Actually, Fear of the Dark (the song) set the template for all their long songs, with the "unending" acoustic bass intros and outros, which add an unnecessary amount of bloat to the songs, sometimes going on 2-3 minutes.

Maiden could stand to do MAYBE one 8-10 minute song per album, NOT three of four. That's just overkill...Maiden were never really a progressive band.

Nicko actually brought a very old snare drum out of retirement for AMOLAD, which he said is what gave that album such a strong, solid snare sound.

76 minutes and only 10 songs. GOOD GOD!

It can be workable as long as they're not a bunch of songs full of nothing but the chorus on repeat.

Remember the song 'No More Lies' from Dance of Death? We were treated to the shrill chorus literally...27 times.

Not a progressive band? You're entitled to your opinion of course but you're just wrong on this one, man. They've always had progressive leanings.

They've definitely referred to themselves as progressive also. As a matter of fact I saw Maiden in 2001 and Dickinson said that they were a progressive metal band that night during a rant between songs.

And please don't draw a parallel between X-Factor and anything they've done since Bruce came back. That's fucked up and you know it. X-Factor blows goats. If not for Virtual XI it would be their worst. The "Blaze experiment" did not go well.

One of my primary complaints with Kevin Shirley's production the past few albums was how quite Steve's bass was. Listen to the first albums and you could really hear that thumpin' bass. But it looks like he's letting 'Arry shine again!

I'm so disappointed they're not coming anywhere near the Southeast. But I'm excited as hell about the album!

I completely agree that Maiden is a progressive band. But how is X Factor a bad album? Seriously do you prefer albums like No Prayer For The Dying or Fear of the Dark? I understand that you may not like Blaze's vocals (I do like them) or be kinda dissapointed with the production, but most of the songs themselves are pieces of art. Sign of the Cross is probably my favourite metal song of all time.

Really enjoyed the song, and looking forward for another kickass album by Maiden. Also liked the artworkd, but production could be better in "El Dorado". Nothing more to say about this until the album comes out, but I would like to say something about that X Factor thing:

The X Factor is by no way a bad album. In fact, as a whole, is way better than Fear of The Dark. The only black point in it were Blaze vocals, which although weren't bad, they simply didn't fit in the Maiden sound. Just remember tracks as "Sing Of The Cross", "Lord Of The Flies", "Man On The Edge", "Fortunes Of War" or "The Aftermath". We have had the chance to listen them with Bruce vocals live many times are they are absolutly KICKASS.

Virtual is worse, in that I agree. But it has The Clansman and Futureal, which are pretty good songs too.

so with that in mind, he is not the ideal vocalist for X Factor songs. Beef up the sound a little, and allow Blaze to roar like he does on his solo records, and you have a fucking great album, guaranteed.

The release of a new Maiden record is always exciting, even if they aren't great nowadays. Along with Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and to a little extent Anthrax, the release of a new Maiden album helps keep up the illusion that we all belong to a legitimate scene rather than a mythological, half hallucinated entity that we casually refer to as a 'scene' ;-)

The song has a classic Maiden sound and feel. I am digging it! I like the mix too, sounds like the guitars are higher in the mix which was my main complaint with there recent albums. Glad to hear that was addressed a bit.

Dickinson does sound like he may have lost a bit, but still sounds good though! On a side note I think it would cool of Maiden to let Blaze sing on one song as a guest vocalist. A chance to redeem himself would be a nice gesture since he has proven himself to be quite an awesome singer with his solo material!

I don't mind the longer songs from Maiden at all as long as they keep them interesting all the way through and don't let them drag. For the most part I think they did a good job of that on AMOLD.

Oh yeah and the cover art rules! Totally classic Maiden with a fresh twist!

The songs themselves may be better since the '99 reunion, but they STILL follow the same format...the interminable, soft intros with Steve's acoustic bass diddling, bookended with a similar outro.

You can't deny that, and that whole trend for them started during the Blaze era.

Seven out of ten songs on their last album had the soft intro/outro formula! That's at least 10-15 minutes of unnecessary bloat...I like the formula when used to a minimum, but when a majority of the songs follow that, it gets really tedious.

And as far as them not being a prog metal band...well, they're not great at it. One or two epics per album would suffice, not 4 or 5.

I just want to hear more punchy, uptempo rockers from them.

too true. the annoying repetition of choruses is yet another regrettable feature of the post 95 Maiden sound. 'Virtual XI' was the real culprit though.

The 'soft intros' go nowhere and basically drag ass. They were at least effectively moody on 'The X Factor', but the same cannot be said for the last two records, where they were completely unnecessary.

Yup, beef up the production and let Blaze roar is well said. The production on those albums were so weak it's like Blaze had to sing on eggshells. The songs themselves are pretty good and I have always thought that if the sound was a lot heavier and Blaze could really let loose X Factor could have really been great!

It's like when Blaze came out with his first solo album people were amazed how good he actually is. Blaze was not a bad choice to replace Bruce it's just Maiden (probably mainly Steve) didn't know how to use his voice properly.

@echoingthevoid: Haha! Ahh that chorus...

@Aces_High99: Completely agree!

That said, I don't think the song is bad. In fact Dickinson does try and go for the lower notes for a large portion of the song which is nice, but still sounds kind of flat sometimes. Strange!
As a quick, accessible rocker, this one beats the hell out of Different World and Wildest Dreams in my books. Nothing groundbreaking though.

Let's hope that's an indication for the rest of the album.

I actually find the song titles intriguing.

Maiden is obviously one of the top 3 greatest Metal bands of all time.
The first 5 albums were flawless.
Influenced 1,000s of bands and Metal forever.
Then things slowly changed.
But the last 3 CDs in my opinion are still very very good.
Not perfect ( well Brave New World was close to perfect ).
I will assume this CD will have some classics and a few filler tracks.
For some reason they push the filler as singles ( Holy Smoke? )
But the main thing is they still write classic killer Metal.
Sign of the Cross
The Clansman
Lord of the Flies
Man on the Edge
Those songs from the Blaze era kick ass.
No more Lies
Blood Brothers
Gates of Tomorrow
Dream of Mirrors
I think these songs stack up against anything from 7th son or somewhere in time.
If you want Children of the Damned or Die with your Boots On it wont happen.
That was almost 30 years ago.
Oh yeah, new song is good but not all that special in my opinion.
And Maiden is my fave band of all time

At least the guitars has more nuts to 'em but they have seriously been phoning it in for the last, what?, two decades?

Seriously, just because they put out a ten minute song with a long intro and repeating the one line chorus over and over, and the whole thing is practically in 4/4, does not make the song "progressive"

liked the song... liking it more with more listens.
The cover... I'm still on the fence. I feel like I felt when FOTD came out... like a SHIT THAT'S IT!? kinda thing goin... Only now it's mediocre artwork on steroids. Super bright colors..completely digital...bubbly flesh... I prefer the days of old. Riggs and his limited pallete of gouache and a 13" square board... still to this day some of the most haunting and memorable images in metal.

Problem w/ being an older diehard Maiden fan is

A. you take this shit way too seriously! (keep that in mind at all times) but then again you wouldn't have it any other way.

2. You've respected and loved the legacy of the band over the decades as they've shifted and grown and how they have always represented nothing but pure quality in music, artwork, promotion, on stage and for just plain being plain decent upstanding people. You really want to see them continue at that level because dammit, that's fuckin' MAIDEN right there. It's easy to put every new release under a microscope because there's such an attachment for the fans ... and it seems to me that Maiden fans are not casual fans... you're either ALL IN 110%... or you're out.

D. I forgot. going to bed.

To add to the "prog" discussion here: Dave and Janick also stated during interviews after the release of AMOLAD that they consider Maiden to be a prog band.

"Aces_High99", agreed: Nothing against progressive rock or metal, but the kind of "prog" Maiden essentially established with the song Fear Of The Dark got really boring over the years. I hope they don't bless us with this track again live and replace it with Afraid To Shoot Strangers, which is much better IMO.

Btw, I own AMOLAD with the bonus studio feature DVD and I wish Nicko would've used that old resurrected snare again (or in case it is that snare here, tune it the same way).

I was really hoping for an overall warmer and more reverb-y production this time around à la Number Of The Beast, Seventh Son or Accident Of Birth. But I guess Kevin Shirley will always produce metal albums in a relatively dry and rough way. This seems to be his signature production style.

Oh, a tour with Opeth and Nevermore would be amazing! Add Devin Townsend to the package and you have four of the absolute best current metal artists together on tour.

"11:11" - good post. I guess since this is probabaly the last or at least one of the last Iron Maiden studio albums, most of us have almost impossibly high expectations, as far as songwriting, musicianship, production and artwork are concerned.

I really like the new song, I'm not going to sit here and nitpick every little thing, most of you guys have nothing better to do I guess now that schools out. Its a killer song from a legendary band. The artwork is cheesy, but really all Maiden artwork is but that's what makes it fun. The last several Maiden records have been really good, this will be the same. And this is coming from a fan, not a fanboy by any means, since 1980. I bought Killers when it was new! And I love how every BM member thinks they are an engineer, look in the mirror past your fat gut and pimply face - you are not. Web versions of songs are terrible, end of story and most computer speaker or headphones are terrible. Get the CD and listen to it properly on a real stereo system. I have a great system and my vinyl records and CDs sound amazing on it, even the ones you guys all cried about in the past.

Fuck yes, the best band in the world is back with a vengeance!!!! The best cover since SIT or SSOASS for sure, it would fit for an extreme band. I´ll download the single this very evening. I haven´t been this stoked since I don´t know when. UP THE MOTHERFUCKING IRONS, and a big middle finger to the ones who thought the album title would mean their final effort.

this is a great first track i think, WAY better than 'Different World' or 'Wildest Dreams' and i think a good indication that there might be some fantastic cuts on here. the album cover, sadly in this day and age, just doesn't matter that much anymore. it's not there best, but it's not Derek Riggs, so that's why! as an old school Maiden fan, I respect and admire them and think they have mostly maintained the quality over the years, and i eagerly await the new album and tour!

First time I heard the last 2 albums, I was alittle bit disappointet, but now AMOLAD is one of my favourite and I love DOD, so play the new album MORE than once!
I dont think the new song is better than Reincarnation of BB and different world, but way better than Wildest Dreams.
Finally some good news since the tragic death of Dio, RIP

I believe the first songs released on the three previous "reunion albums" were:

The Wicker Man
Wildest Dreams
The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg

So where does this fall? Personally, I think The Wicker Man is a near-perfect album opener: short, punchy, upbeat, great solo from Adrian, and good memorable chorus.

I would have to say that El Dorado is better than either Breeg or Wildest Dreams...at least from what I remember, neither Breeg or WD left much of an impression until I listened to them forever.

I took me about three listens before El Dorado really bored into my brain, and now I really like it.

So...this is a somewhat promising development based on how Maiden has roled out albums in the past. I love that 'Arry's bass is audible and prominent again.

I don't think it's correct to say that album covers don't matter anymore.

This is MAIDEN we're talking about...they have a legacy to uphold.

I think the cover is a bit too cartoony and bright. I thought AMOLAD was more mature and understated. This is a step backwards.

looked like a generic power metal cover from Century Media circa late 90's. think Jag Panzer. with a constipated looking Eddie after sucking on a bag of lemons.

I like the colours of Final Frontier. it reminds me of old Maiden.

Dance of Death had one of their best concepts EVER but the execution was horrible.

Instead of saying either one, I'll go with both:

Part One- The Positive.

---------------------------
1. Song titles are, while slightly cliched, pretty promising

My favorite era of Maiden was SIT and 7th son. Its when I first got into the group. I love a return to the sci fi fantasy concepts of that era. I like the real life stuff they talked about more recently, but this is a welcome change up.

2. Cover is pretty sweet though not perfect.

I like the cover. Reminds me of a SIT meets Fear of the Dark mixture of concepts- but with the space element added in. Its missing something a little though, but overall its pretty cool. Great colors. Way better than Virtual 11 and Dance of Death (and isnt it ironic those may be their worst? Maybe the better the cover the better the album. Though Angel and The Gamblers cover was kinda cool)

3. Now to the song: Cool riffs, a bit like Fear or No Prayer's "Rockier" tracks (From Here to Eternity or Holy Smoke) but with an added edge during the verses. A kind of darker sabbathy riff- they dont do "evil" riffs often so it was cool to hear. Not too much E-C-D chord progression which gets cliched on X Factor or the last album. And the chorus doesn't repeat too much and the solos- FUCKING SWEET. Even Janicks tones improved as well as articulation. Definitely the best guitar PRODUCTION in a long time too (At least since Brave New World)- meaty and heavy, drums sound clear, bass tight. The song is good, but yeah, its better than "Different Worlds" or the first track off the last two in general..

Now for the bad...

1. Bruces vocal parts in the song sound...strained..

I don't know if its the mix or what. But being as that the last tour contained some of his best vocal performances (with Iron Maiden at least, solo he was getting pretty awesome as well) EVER I don't think its age (whats a year or two on age when you're at his age).

2. The vocal melodies are kinda half assed.

I don't know what it is, but something doesn't catch the ear as much with the vocals.

3. THat begining "Wasted years" open e string part is just too fucking cliched.

I get sick of Murray always doing that lick (And contrary to popular belief- its him not Adrian- though YES it was Adrian during the SONG wasted years) Hes done it since "Losfer Words" r its pretty similar to that, and it gets old. Murray is definitely the weakest member as far as musical knowledge. Janick can shred though hes sloppy but he has a more varied music pallette. Adrian is pretty varied but does rely on cliches as well. Janicks musical pallete is so varied I would dare say he saved some of the albums in the 90s with his input. Because he digs acoustic guitars and stuff that goes beyond the stock Maiden riffs and chord progressions that they always seem to do. Wouldn't surprise me if some of the better riffs in the song were his, though Adrian on the last album stuck out with riffs (Lord of Light) too.

So thats what I think about the song.

The album will be good. I think it will also have some stuff we're not used to, without compromising the Maiden sound.
The vocal issues worry me but I am definitely excited.

- 21 year Maiden fan.

Bruce's vocal chords have to go sometime...he's certainly no Dio. He's been losing vocal range gradually over the last decade. It's gonna get harder and harder for him to unleash that "air raid siren", especially live.

Yeah, he did sound pretty damned good two years ago on the SBIT tour, but a lot of his high notes showed the same degree of strain.

As far as it being "only" two years...hey, a lot of 80 year-olds will be dead in two years. Aging happens.

I agree that Dave is the most one-dimensional guitarist in Maiden, but he makes up for it with his tone and technique.

Janick's solos still grate my ears, although he's gotten better since Adrian returned.

Adrian is by far the most well-rounded and creative guitarist in the band. He can do it all.

Ha!

Aside from the euphoria that's ensuing over this release... I (like many of you) are just damn thankful that these guys are still churning out top-notch music after all these years.

On board since 1983 and will remain on board through the final frontier and beyond.

Thanks Maiden!

Not bashing Dave Murray in the slightest...he's played some of Maiden's best solos, but he is a bit of a one-trick pony with his legato technique.

He's always smooth as hell and his tone is impeccable, though.

I'm really liking the new album cover and song. Finally the production has some meat to the guitars and the song actually wants to rock! Not be some "epic" wimp song which all non Smith penned tunes have been lately.

Yay no more super thin sounding guitars!

I'm quite shure that the open E intro part was played by Janick - right guitar in the stereo mix - same as his solo.

El Dorado still doesn't grow on me. And I can't look (or rather listen) past the overly dry and sterile production, sorry Kevin Shirley and 'Arry.

I was listening to Heaven & Hell's The Devil You Know, Alice In Chains' Black Gives Way to Blue and Bruce's Accident Of Birth today.

These albums all feature a production I would have loved to hear on the new Iron Maiden album. As I wrote in my review of the great Heaven & Hell album here on Blabbermouth:

"Did I mention the big production? I suspect this would be the way Martin Birch would make these compositions sound in 2009, too. Kevin Shirley and Steve Harris, take notes!"

Obviously they didn't.

Still looking forward to The Final Frontier, although with a bit more reluctance.

The guitars sound better, the drums sound worse - equalisation.

I really don't want to piss on somebody's parade here, I'm just underwhelmed in the same way I was when The Wicker Man with its tin can snare sound and the thin guitars was released in 2000. No real improvement since then.

Damn, listen to El Dorado and then Bible Black...

So whats the name of your band? Whats the myspace or last fm channel? What kind of equipment you use? A lot of local gigs or have you opened for any big names? As for myself, I've been in bands the past ten years, but have recently gone solo- been on three demos and am working on a full length solo album. So what the fuck are you going on about again?

As for Murray, I agree with Aces High 99- pretty dead on with his assessment.

I agree, in some ways I'm mixed on the production- I like some of the fresh live sound theyre trying to go for, but certain parts sound flat at times- as its been for awhile (but it shits over the Steve Harris guided productions of the Nineties, though I thought No Prayer had a decent sound in some ways).

Either way, it'd be great to see what an Andy Sneap, Neil Kernon, or shit (prime era) Bob Rock could do. All those guys have their strengths and weaknesses (yeah sounds commercial with BOb Rock but his Cult productions and some others were great) - it'd be good for them to try to do a somewhat slick production but the benefits of the more "live" sound. In other words, the slickest they can be with analog (like Black Album, Dr Feelgood, or the Birch eras best albums..duh)

Problem is, I think they go for organic but they also use the wrong amounts of "organic" and the wrong amounts of digital in the wrong ways. Its not like they're at Steve Albini's studio using the vintage tape machines and then putting them into pro tools (to mix or master) for an awesome organic analog sound- its almost like they're trying to do a "replica" of an older sound of an older time, but without getting the details right.

Sounds like a bunch of nitpicking old grandmas in a retirement home.

The new song is great, the album cover is fucking cool (best in years, since Brave New World), and Dave Murray is a damn fine guitarist (very underrated) who play rings around YOU wannabes and is capable of wonderfully complex structure that he has used to lead the charge of Maiden for many years. What have you done recently?

As for "epic" versus "shorter" songs. Yeah, I miss some of those hard hitting days too, but I also love that Maiden grew into the mature beast that they are. Either way its a win situation. If I want to listen to those shorter faster songs, I just play them or listen to them play them live. Or if I really want more, I put on Sweden's WOLF. Fucking awesome band.

UP THE FUCKING IRONS!
Maiden fan since early 1980's.

I'm really pleased about the new song, I was actually surprised when I heard the guitars come in, they sound huge. I hope the album will have more diversity than amolad, but even if It doesnt I'm sure I'll still love it cause Maidens hooks are great.

I wonder why many think bruce doesnt sound great anymore. I've been listening to maiden alot in the past few weeks and on Live after death he really does miss a lot of the high notes, and is also slightly pitchy. On Flight 666 the pitchyness was gone and he was hitting the high notes that he had missed on live after death. I'll admit, his tone has changed a bit over the years but as far as vocal technique, and range, he is definitely better now, at least live.

I agree 100 percent. THe vocals aren't bad on this song, but I just thought there could have been some better vocal melodies. But overall your opinion on Bruce is dead on..Live After Death is one of the worst live albums for vocals, he sounds extremely strained and horrible when he basically GROWLS the high notes (eg: End of Flight of Icarus).

In fact I would dare say basically LAD-No Prayer he sounded kinda shitty and raspy. He adapted to a better raspy tone on Fear and was getting perpetually better at vocals as his solo career went on. During the recent tour, I was astounded that he hit the end of Aces high, hit many of the Troopers high notes- and in general had a bad ass tone.

It sounds like I'm dissing Bruce- I'm not. But theres been some historical revisionism, he sounded bad live during the second leg of the Live After Death tour (At least on the album other than the Hammersmith Odeon tracks) and on SIT all the stuff I've heard was very raspy. He sounded awesome on Accident of Birth, Chemical Wedding and Brave New World (AND on the tours). I didnt like DoD but he sounded good on that and the last one as well. I hope my point is more clear, but its good to hear that some people realize that he sounds better now in a lot of ways than in the Eighties (At least the latter half of the Eighties)

Bruce does have a better singing technique than the live after death era. He's just barreling through those songs live, brute-force like and it doesn't sound good at all.

That said he definitely doesn't have the range from the early 1980s. Without the vocal training he'd never get through these same songs nowadays.

Of course that's completely natural. Especially because I don't think he didn't had a lot of training in the early years and I'm sure that affected his voice with all the crazy touring schedule.
As long as he doesn't try to go too high on albums, so he doesn't sound too strained. As for live... no one really cares at the time!
