F**K THE FACTS

It has become apparent that inventive Canadian grinders FUCK THE FACTS have no concept of what it means to "hit the wall." They just keep churning out releases and the quality never seems to suffer, just as they've done since releasing "Discoing the Dead" in 2000. I had the misfortune to miss 2008's split release with LENG TCH'E, but thoroughly appreciated the skillfully composed and expansive grindcore of 2006's "Stigmata High Five" and 2008's "Disgorge Mexico". With the independently released "Unnamed EP", either the essence of the band has really hit home this time or I just find it a slightly more satisfying experience than either of the previous full-lengths. Whatever the case, FUCK THE FACTS never disappoints and "Unnamed EP" is no exception.

There has always been something about the way those raw FUCK THE FACTS riffs get inside your mind and rub up against the synapses that sets them apart from the average grindcore act. But that's not the only point of distinction, as "Unnamed EP" so poignantly exemplifies. The songs burst forth in a flurry of notes and rhythmic calamity, then suddenly take a left turn and groove, surge, then snap back into varying states of discordant bliss, as Mel Mongéon's vocals leave abrasions and bruises all along the way. On a song like "Wake", one of several that wraps up in less than two minutes (sometimes less than one) and features a bevy of impacting changeups, a true blue segment of melody will leap out of the mix and surprise with its freshness.

And that in a nutshell is what makes "Unnamed EP" such a smashing effort; the ability of the band to pack so much into such a short amount of time and somehow make it fit. That includes the re-recordings of "La Tete Hors De L'eau" and "Doghead". On "Unnamed EP" you get a delicious sample platter of what FUCK THE FACTS is all about and not a minute is wasted in doing so.
